Rabada Tops KZN Breeders Million Mile Lineup

The winner of the R2-million, Grade 1 Daily News 2000, Rabada, that was also just touched off by hot Vodacom Durban July fancy Black Arthur in the Canon Guineas, is among the 10 runners that will compete in the R1-million KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile at Greyville Racecourse on Sunday.

Keep A Lid On Your Levies

KwaZulu-Natal is the only place that pays people to breed their horses here, courtesy of our local premium scheme. Which means you can keep your mares and foals at the nation’s leading stud farm at a significant saving to yourself.

MILLIONS OF (S)MILES

In one of South African racing’s more refreshing innovations of recent years, the KZN Breeders put their heads together 15 months ago, and came up with the idea of a race day dedicated to products of the province. With the co-operation and assistance of Gold Circle, and by redirecting part of their premium scheme as a gesture of appreciation to owners and trainers for their support in the sales ring, they initiated the KZN Breeders Million Mile in 2013, alongside eight R200,000 races over various distances for just about every category of racehorse in the book. In a country in which a Rand buys just about what a dollar does elsewhere, that’s a commendable show.

Z FOR ZILLIONAIRE

The Zulus have done it again. As they’ve have been doing since 1893. The KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile takes place at Clairwood racecourse on Sunday, marking its 122nd renewal, which makes the race four years senior to the Vodacom Durban July; after the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the Summer Cup, it ranks as the third oldest event on the South African racing calendar.

KZN BREEDERS SERIES (Top 20)

For 3-Year-Olds and Up

As at 1 April 2014

The fourth published Log for the KZN Breeders Series for three-year-olds and up sees Summerhill Stud’s daughter of Stronghold, Negev, remain at the top but this time with 35 points, putting herself above former leader Island Fiesta (Backworth Stud - Miesque’s Approval).

The KZN Breeders Race Day takes place 29 June at Clairwood, with a stake of over R2.4 million up for grabs to owners and trainers of KZN-bred racehorses. It must be noted this Log is only for the KZN Breeders Series of R200,000 races, and excludes the Million Mile entries which follow normal race entry procedures.

A half-sister to top Two-Year-Old filly of her generation, Extra Zero (by Way West), Negev is trained by Louis Goosen and is owned by Messrs C M Comaroff & B K Parker. Out of mare Haifaa (IRE) by Doyoun (IRE), Negev pushed up her points recently when she finished second to Jackodore in the Listed Nkosazana Stakes. She has won three times and placed 18 times - including a third in the Grade 3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein, behind Cherry On The Top. She also finished four lengths off Gitiano in the KZN Breeders Million Mile last year at Clairwood.

Keep a look out for Summerhill-bred and consigned Kahal colt, Lot 334 named Ebony Knight, a half-brother to Negev and Extra Zero, at the upcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale taking place 27 and 28 April at the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston. This is the immediate damline of sire Maroof and Arrasas, as well as Desert King.

KZN Breeders Race Day

KZN BREEDERS’ RACEDAY

Greyville, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders’ Race Day is taking place on the Sunday before the Vodacom Durban July at Greyville racecourse.

There will be seven races for KZN-bred racehorses with stakes of R200,000 each as well as the Million Mile, which will have a stake of R1million.

To date, there are in excess of 600 entries for the six races for three-year-olds and up and over 250 entries for the single juvenile two-year-old race. Supplementary entries open in April.

The current ‘three-year-old and up’ log-leader with 28 points is Summerhill-bred Rebel Queen by Kahal; a half-sister to stallion Rebel King and Uncle Tommy. Owned by Fito Englezakis and Rob Macnab, she is trained by Corne Spies and has had five wins (winning three in her last four starts) and seven places to date. Out of the mare Cousin Linda by Badger Land, she was a R280,000 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale graduate. Rebel Queen has a smart full-sister who recently entered training called Cousin Annie.

KZN BREEDERS RACE DAY

30 June 2013

Thoroughbred breeders in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated some unique marketing strategies over the years but under the umbrella of the KZN Breeders’ Club they have embarked on their most ambitious project yet with the announcement of the KZN Breeders Day to be held at Greyville on Sunday, June 30 2013.

Supporting the R1million KZN Breeders Mile will be six other races carrying a stake of R200,000 each but restricted to horses that qualify as KZN-breds. The meeting comes the weekend before the KZN Yearling Sale and will give added incentive to prospective buyers to invest in KZN-bred stock.

The six supporting races will be two races each over 1200m, 1600m and 1900m, one each for fillies and mares and colts and geldings respectively. The races will be open to all horses country-wide whose credentials meet the criteria of “KZN bred” as prescribed by the rules of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme.

Horses need to be pre-entered to qualify for the races at a nominal fee of R50 plus VAT with first nominations closing on Friday, December 14, 2012. Early entry ensures that all horses nominated can be timeously checked to ensure that they qualify as KZN breds. However, there will be a further supplementary entry stage on Tuesday, April 30 2013 with a supplementary fee of R2,000 plus VAT.

To qualify for the races, points will be awarded in the months leading up to the racemeeting. Horses registered at first entry will receive a 4-point bonus but horses supplemented in April will not qualify for the bonus. Points for Maiden races will be awarded on a 4, 3, 2 basis for first, second and third. All other races, including Grade 1’s, will have points awarded from first to fifth on 8, 6, 4, 3, 1 basis. Points will be awarded regardless of the distance of the races and it will be up to the connections of the horses as to which races they nominate for. The intention is to publish a points log on a fortnightly basis.

This season, points will be earned from 1 January, 2013 but as from next year the initial entry stage will be the first day of the season, Thursday, 1 August 2013.
