“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘let’s party!’,” enthused the acclaimed actor Robin Williams. In South African racing, we enter a Season to be Merry before the official Festive Season starts. The Highveld Spring Spectacular beckons - laden with treasures - followed by the Cape Summer Season with its series of mouthwatering classics.

Racingweb reported yesterday that high on the racing enthusiast’s agenda this Highveld season will be the third running of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup on 7 November, followed by the amazing Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale (8 November), the only SA thoroughbred sale that showed a growth in turnover last year, hitting the headlines with its mindboggling almost 50% hike amidst a depressing and very serious worldwide slump.

Scheduled for 7 November at Turffontein, the Emperors Ready To Run Sweepstakes over 1450m has a guaranteed stake of R1,5 million, with monies paid out from 1st to 10th place. In addition this year the connections of the winner will receive a magnificent trophy worth R50,000 courtesy of Summerhill Stud, Emperors Palace, the BSA and Phumelela. “The great racing trophies have all but disappeared from racing when it played a big part in bygone eras,” said Summerhill Stud’s Mick Goss, whose tireless efforts have given the race a superb profile and a terrific following in only three years.

”This year we will have the best line-up of runners ever,” said Goss.

Already 17 graduates from this sale have won, including Ambience Stud’s Rosetta Stone, Warmonger, Second World, Trafalgar Legacy, Sicoco, Fisaniand the Kahal colts Smanjemanje and Havasha, a fluent debut winner for Mike de Kock and partners at Clairwood last Sunday.

Charl Pretorius, whose Freeracer Bloodstock purchased Havasha at the Ready To Run Sale last year and who owns a share of the chestnut with Mike de Kock, Tony Moodley, Karel and Kiki Miedema and John Finlayson, said: ”Havasha is a perfect example of how the Summerhill Breeze-up gallops can benefit buyers. We were impressed with his action at the gallops and then Mike de Kock and I studied the many video clips on the Bloodstock SA website and confirmed our opinion that Havasha was the best Kahal on the sale. Mike took a closer look at his conformation and he had everything in the right places.

”It really all boiled down to his action, the fluent way he moved, and while it is too soon to say whether he will end up a decent sort or not, the point is that horse selection is made easier when you  can see how your prospective purchase strides. Your fancy can be bred in the purple, but gallop like a spider. Having the benefit of seeing them in action makes a hugely significant difference. I am seriously at a loss to know why the breezing concept has taken so long to take off here. Ready To Run is the best value sale of the year by a long way.”
