2009 EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

THE OUTCOME

There is no other way to describe it. At the height of the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression, the South African Thoroughbred market stood up and said “I’m the only game in town!”

Up 9.4% on average (at R189,895 against R173,636 last year) and with a clearance rate exceeding 90% for the second year, the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale has retained the mantle of being consistantly the world’s best performing auction of the past five years.

And there’s one very good reason for it. The whole Ready To Run package has captured the public imagination like no other, from the Gallops at Summerhill; the big hitting” selection panel; the R1,5 million stake and the odds of a crack at it; the Emperors Palace pre-sale party; the celebrities and the best “gas” at a raceday known to Gauteng; and then the sale itself.

Unlike most marathon auctions, this one has a “boutique” catalogue of just 160 lots, and like a twenty/20 cricket match in both atmosphere and duration, it ebbs and flows emotionally for just five hours. By 7:30pm, more than R27 million has changed hands, almost treble the output of the internationally celebrated Nederburg Wine Auction.

Given that Summerhill has always claimed “there’s a horse for everyone out the Ready To Run” the veracity lies in the spread in prices, from R30,000 to R1,2 million. The truth of the statement was in bold print and the R60,000 purchase of last year, Pierre Jourdan, scooted off with the major part of the R1,5 million prize.

“Travel the world, and you’ll find South Africans are renowned for their enterprise, their work ethic and their positive outlook,” was Summerhill boss Mick Goss comment after the sale. “They know there’s life after the recession, and they’re already looking forward to next year’s race and sale.”

Talking of the race, two past Chairmen of the S.A. Jockey Club, Ronnie Napierand Alick Costa, commented independently that this race caused as much vibe as they’d known on a Gauteng racecourse in two decades. Hardly surprising though. If you’ve picked right, you can get to compete for the fourth richest stake in racing, after just one visit to the racecourse.

And don’t forget “the Cup”. It’s pretty much a unanimous verdict, that the Summerhill claim that it’s the best trophy in racing was absolutely on the button.

2009 EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

GOSFORTH PARK, SOUTH AFRICA

RESULTS

The 2009 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale ended on a high note at the TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, on Sunday night when last year’s phenomenal record aggregate of R26.74 million was marginally bettered and the average price per lot was well up on the 2008 figure.

The event realized a turnover of R27.155 million, up 1.5% on last year and the only major sale to have improved its aggregate amidst the worldwide economic slump this year. The average price was up 9.4% to R189,895 from R173,636 and the highest price paid of R2.1 million fell just short of last year’s R2.2 million.

“We are very pleased,” said Mick Goss of Summerhill Stud, who had consigned 108 of the 163 lots on offer. “With more fillies than colts for sale this year we thought that the sale might yield lower figures, yet if one looks at how well fillies are performing in the Ready To Run Cup it is hardly surprising that buyers don’t shy away from the females!”

Mike de Kock paid the sale’s top price of R2.1 million for Galileo’s daughter Uthawini. She was bought for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum “She has everything, pedigree, looks and conformation,” De Kock said. “Galileo stands at something like 300,000 Euros which shows you that this can be considered a bargain.”

Prominent owner Andre Macdonald, the under-bidder on Uthawini, secured the only other Galileo on the sale, paying R1 million for Igugu. “You win some and you lose some,” said Mr Macdonald, but I am very happy with the one I got.”

Champion trainer Charles Laird and patron Markus Jooste, active with 11 buys, paid R900 000 for Street Cry’s daughter Emakhaya and Laird said : “This filly hasn’t got a great dam line, but I loved her as a specimen and she moves really well too.” “We are pleased to have got the bid knocked down to us.”

De Kock was the top buyer at the sale by aggregate and by average. He signed for 6 lots, totaling R4.095 million at an average of R682 500 per purchase.

Summerhill’s stalwart Kahal was the top sire by aggregate, his 16 lots realizing R4.795 million.

“We are thrilled and in fact surprised with these results,” commented Caroline Simpson, Sales Manager of BloodStock SA, who conducted the auction.

BSA’s CEO Jan Naude added: “There are lots of positives to be taken from the figures and the clearance rate of over 90%, which is on a par with 2008.” “Notwithstanding the economic downturn, thoroughbred sales in South Africa continue to perform extremely well.”

PIERRE JOURDAN

2009 EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP CHAMPION

charl-pretorius
charl-pretorius

Charl Pretorius www.racingweb.co.zaPierre Jourdan, within three runs, has returned his purchase price more than 12 times for the Gary Alexander stable and owner Emilio Baisero. The colt by Parade Leader quickened away from his rivals in Saturday’s Peermont Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m and won impressively from the Mike de Kock stablemates Fisani and Havasha. The connections banked R750,000 between them.

Pierre Jourdan, described as “nothing really special to look at and with a bit of a Roman head”, fetched only R60,000 at the 2008 Ready To Run Sale and Dean Alexander said on Sunday: “This just shows again how unpredictable this game is. We liked Pierre Jourdan and bought him, he was one of several buys at the sale and we didn’t have an owner so Emilio stepped in for a share. He is just over the moon!”

The Ready To Run Sale, which gets underway at 2pm today at the TBA Sales Complex, continues to be a “dreammaker” and Pierre Jourdan, unbeaten and on the upgrade, is likely to earn lots more cool cash. “We’ll give the Dingaans a miss and go perhaps for the Cape Guineas. Next year’s Gauteng Guineas will also be a target,” Alexander said.

The only sad thing, Alexander notes, was that apprentice Derreck David missed the ride due to injury. KwaZulu-Natal’s Sean Cormack deputized with his usual polished riding performance. The young apprentice was on course, however, to lend his support to the connections.

Pierre Jourdan is by Parade Leader from Vin Fizz, a mare who is interestingly owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum from Dubai:

“We bought Vin Fizz in foal to Parade Leader,” said Summerhill Stud’s Mick Goss, who can again be very proud of the energetic buzz around this year’s race which was evident to everyone at Turffontein.

Goss added: “So in essence Sheikh Mohammed sold the winner for R60,000 and bought the second-placed filly Fisani for R400 000. And he also owns the mare Amusing who produced last year’s winner Smangaliso. That’s two in a row for our partner from the UAE!”

Summerhill’s boss congratulated the Alexander stable and said: “They have been big supporters of our establishment over many years and this was a well-deserved win!”

PIERRE JOURDAN

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP 2009

At a race meeting dubbed by long-time Jockey Club Chairman Alick Costa as the “buzziest” on a Gauteng racecourse in a decade, the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup lived up to its billing as the centre piece of a great day’s entertainment.  While the result of the Cup was not quite as the betting suggested, it was very much a form result with the unbeaten Pierre Jourdan emerging with the laurels after a sustained chase up the murderous Turffontein straight, all the more testing for the rain that bucketed down Friday evening.

This was a triumph for one of the Ready To Run Sale’s biggest supporters of the past 5 years, the Alexanders, and their partner Italian-born Emilio Baisero.  The Catholic origins of the connections were strongly evident in a winner’s circle crowded out by brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins and grandchildren, and in an emotionally charged trophy presentation.

Gallant in defeat, and as game as a Summerhill hare, the filly Fisani broke from the Number 14 gate and did it the tough way in her attempt to make every post a winning one, whilst she was chased home by her stable mate the Mike de Kock-trained Havasha and the Fitri Hay-owned Mahubo, like the Melbourne Cup third on Tuesday, conditioned by Herman Brown Jnr, looking none the worse for his intercontinental exertions.

For the runner-ups principal owner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, there was both triumph and tragedy in the outcome, although he will be the first to admit that breeding the winner at the expense of his filly, is about the sweetest consolation His Highness could think of.  For the record, Sheikh Mohammed has the unique distinction of having bred consecutive winners of the Cup in last year’s winner Smangaliso

He is partnered in his ownership of the filly by past Jockey Club Chairman Ronnie Napier and his wife Bev, and Summerhill Stud.  Pedigree buffs will be interested to know that Fisani is a half-sister to the triple group One performer, Catmandu, and the top Eastern Cape athlete Ecoile Militaire, from the celebrated Moller family of English Derby hero Tianoso, Irish Oaks ace, Give Thanks and Italian Derby winner Old CountryYou can’t lick genetics!

EMPERORS PALACE COCKTAIL FUNCTION

The Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale may constitute the smallest catalogue of the year, but the quality of its entries and the phenomenal success of its graduates at the races, makes it South Africa’s most glamorous showpiece. Among the gathering crowd at this evening’s cocktail function in the beautiful grounds of the Emperors Palace, will be His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, buyers and horsemen from Hong Kong and Singapore under the stewardship of South African diplomat, Davey Chiu, and Racing SA’s chief, Peter Gibson, together with numbers of delegates from the United Kingdom and Europe, all descending from the skies this morning.

It takes some kind of a sale and some kind of an occasion to magnetise people from across the globe, many of whom will be making use of Victor Strugo’s choice of the Golden City’s best restaurants, while they’re here.

LATEST NEWS AND PHOTOS FROM BLOCK A

The sales ground came alive yesterday, and the frenetic energy was palpable. Racing at the Vaal did not deter Gauteng’s training fraternity from turning up in numbers, and both their grooms and the horses had a decidedly “knackered” look to them by sunset.

It will be even busier today, but that of course is our principle purpose.

With 110 horses owned by 169 different people across seven time zones, it takes an army of correspondents to keep our vendors abreast of developments.

At the same time, arrangements for tonight’s big Emperors Palace Cocktail Party, were celebrities, owners, trainers and jockeys with engagements in the R1,5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, will be gathered. On display is the best trophy in racing, a spectacular goblet of pure silver, beautifully embossed in the old style. The trophy’s connectivity with Summerhill goes back to 1922, when its donor, King George V’s brother in law, the Earl Of Athlone was hosted by the erstwhile Deputy Prime Minister, Col George Richards at the farm.

As if that’s not enough for the plate, tomorrow heralds the big race. Elsewhere in this column you’ll find the betting, and that tells us just what an open affair it is. Sporting Post gives 13 of the 16 runners a chance of taking the spoils, and we’re proud to say that all 13 were graduates of the Summerhill draft last year. Indeed, fifteen of the sixteen entries in the race were.

Welcome Mbatha, better known to most of you as manager of the Summerhill Trading Store, but deployed in Johannesburg for the week’s events as commissar responsible for public relations and logistics, will have his hands full ferrying fans of the game, owners, bloodstock agents and our international guests, from the “Palace” to the racecourse and the salesground.

BREAKING NEWS : THE TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION

Two new technological revolutions will make it possible for Ready To Run watchers to view the big race on Saturday (R1,5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup) within minutes of it being run, and to watch Sunday’s auction live online through our website and blog. While all of this is almost incomprehendable to this Zulu farmer, it’s nonetheless a wonderful innovation which in a few years time might be no great shakes, right now it’s a “first”.

As a matter of information, the race is due to be run at 4pm on Saturday, while the sale starts on Sunday at 2pm, and they generally sell around 30 lots an hour.

If we have any further technical information between now and the weekend, we’ll post it on the blog.

EMPERORS “CUP” BY SIRE : A FEW REVELATIONS

OF KAHAL, MUHTAFAL, LABEEB AND MALHUB

You might have expected it, but even so, fifteen out of sixteen of the entries in any field for R1,5 million, is an astonishing number, no matter how you judge it. That’s the story for Saturday’s big race, insofar as graduates from last year’s Summerhill Ready To Run draft, are concerned.

Four of them are by Kahal, whose already supplied a winner of the event, two by Muhtafal(likewise, sire of a previous winner), and there are three each by the late lamented Labeeb, and the surprise package of this year, Malhub, who is certainly an expanding influence with his second crop.

While Labeebis no longer around, the other three have healthy representations in Sunday’s sale.

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP CONTENDERS

Of one thing there is no doubt. This is the strongest assembly of three-year-olds we’ll witness this season, and senior journalist Charl Pretorius prediction that whatever the outcome, the winner will go forward to the Highveld Summer and the emerging Cape season with the mantle of leading three-year-old on his/her shoulders.

The best of horses, the best of trainers, the best of jockeys, the best of draws for some of the top fancies, and you have all the ingredients for a serious contest.

We guess the betting will have to be our guide as to what the punter thinks until the race proper, but for what it’s worth, Phumelela’s selections, in view of the draw are :

SHOW OF WINNERS ON AGAIN FOR BREEDER GOSS

mick goss

Mick Goss

(Photo : Leigh Willson)

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE 2009

Following is an extract from an article written by David Mollet, which appeared in yesterday’s Business Day.

“If popular American talkshow host Jay Leno went head to head with SA Champion Breeder Mick Goss he might battle to come out on top.

Leno never missed a beat in his recent interview with President Barack Obama, but he would have to do his homework to match strides with Goss on the subject of breeding.

Goss and his Summerhill Stud entourage arrived in Johannesburg at the weekend to put the finishing touches to next Sunday’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale at the TBA complex in Germiston.

The Mooi River-based breeder was in his usual ebullient form yesterday. He said : “The list of top horses that have emerged from this sale are all the adverts we need. They include 2009 champion sprinter Rebel King, Gold Cup winner Desert Links, Garden Province Stakes heroine Outcome and dual Guineas winner Imbongi.

“The Summerhill draft at the Ready To Run is the best source, pound for pound, of big race performers anywhere.

“You might not be able to beat Bill Gates in the boardroom, but on Saturdays at Turffontein, you can level the playing fields,” said Goss. At last year’s Ready To Run sale, a total of 38 of the Summerhill draft sold for R100,000 and under. However, buyers might have to dig deeper this year due to some top-class pedigrees and the improvement in economic sentiment.

One of Goss’s top picks is Igugu (lot 114), an Aussie-bred filly by Galileo out of the Irish mare, Zarinia. The youngster hails from the family of last year’s champion European filly, Zarkava, so auctioneer Mike Killassy will be aware he is likely to be bombarded with bids.

Trainer Mike de Kock is hopeful of a big run from Havasha in Saturday’s R1,5m Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, and victory for the Kahal colt would provide a big boost for his half- sister, Boysenberry (lot 28). The filly is by Computaform Sprint victor, Cataloochee.

A big threat to Havasha could be Pierre Jourdan - a R60,000 Ready To Run purchase last year - who went into the notebooks of many pundits when given the verdict over another graduate, Smanjemanje, at Turffontein 10 days ago.

Summerhill graduate Mystic has proved a bargain, with this R90,000 buy boasting earnings of R400,000. The six-year-old will bid to add to that total when he takes on nine rivals in the fifth race at the Vaal today.”

OF SHOCKING, ZENYATTA AND THE EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN

As South Africans rejoiced Herman Brown’s ground breaking third in the “race that stops the Australian nation”, with the much publicized Chechen President’s Mourilyan, horsemen around the world were left to reflect on what other heights Street Cry can still scale.

Besides having the favourite for Saturday’s Breeders Cup Classic in the United States (the unbeaten Zenyatta), his son Shocking prevailed this morning over one of the better line-ups in recent years in the Melbourne Cup. For some time now, we’ve been tipping Street Cry as the natural heir to the present emperor of American Stallions, A.P.Indy, and with Group One winners in the northern, the southern and the western hemispheres, it seems his ascendancy is now secure.

They run on every surface, he has champions from six furlongs to two miles, and it seems they’re as durable as old boots.

Anyone attending the panel session following the Emperors Palace Ready To Run gallops at Summerhill on the 16th October (or for that matter tuned into Tellytrack last night) will have noticed that at least four of the panellists tipped the Street Cry entry in Sunday’s sale as the standout female in the catalogue (lot 89). For what its worth, this is the last of the southern hemisphere bred Street Cry’s for the time being. He stopped shuttling three years ago, and while he resumed again this season, you have to wonder whether, as one of the most valuable properties in the world, he’s is likely to repeat it again.
