KZN BREEDERS AWARDS 2013

The most commonly repeated phrase of the past five years is “times are tough”, and while there are distinct signs that the world is in a better space than it was at the height of the recession, it’s by no means a tribal dance out there. Across the agricultural spectrum, farmers, and particularly little farmers, have been brutalized for their lack of the benefits of scale, and our colleagues in the breeding world have not been exempt. The salvation that will come when the supply and demand equation moves in favour of producers (starting next year) will be the turning point, but for much of the past several years, small breeders have been under siege.

Thank heavens then, for small mercies like Saturday’s celebration of the KZN Breeders awards, which served as a field hospital for broken souls. Occasions like these massage the wounds, they lift the spirits and they remind us that, despite life’s setbacks, there is always hope and given the chance, occasionally kids from the sticks like us, can achieve some excellence.

Saturday night was a new milestone for Summerhill, too. Yes, we’ve won the national Breeders’ title a modern record of nine consecutive times, but there is something special in the applause from your own neighbourhood, and this was the 20th consecutive year that we’ve topped the KZN Breeders’ charts. You might say it’s a matter of scale, and of course it is, but scale is not something we’ve always held a monopoly on. Our earlier successes came at a time when the Scott Brothers, George Rowles’ Ivanhoe Stud and Guy Landon’s Aldora Stud were at their zenith, and we look back upon those days with as much pride as we salute the modern era. If I may say so, twenty years of accumulated success comes only from people who have been resolute in the hours they’ve worked, in their dedication to what they do and the passion they bring with it, and let’s not forget, a good measure of skill as well.

The evening was a triumph too, for a dear old friend who like Bridget Oppenheimer, represents an era we’re not likely to see again. The great private breeders are relics of a former century, and in many respects, they epitomised the “sport of kings:” they did it for the sport and the sport alone. The Horse Of The Year accolade went to the outstanding filly, Festival Of Fire, surely as good a horse as Chris Saunders’ Invermooi Stud ever produced, and just as surely a compliment to the talents of Filli Bowles, who’s served Chris as faithfully as any man could wish.

For the record, our team got the nod from the always-excellent master of ceremonies, Graeme Hawkins, on seven occasions, and for four of these we have several partners to commend. If only because he reads these columns more avidly than anyone else (and serves as our Editor-in-Chief!), let’s begin with the Champion Two Year Old Filly, Admiral’s Eye, a Group One-performing daughter of Admire Main. We owe the fact that our name is cited at all among her breeders to our good friend Judge Alan Magid, who acquired her dam Surfer’s Eye in the first place, and invited us to join him in the venture. I give nothing away in reminding you that the judge is an octogenarian, as spritely as he was the day he entered the breeding game, and inspired no doubt by the fact that one of Europe’s most successful breeders of the past century, Lord Weinstock, who only took up the game well into his senior years, proceeded to produce at least a half dozen European Classic winners before climbing the stairs to his resting place.

The Champion Female Stayer was appropriately named Salutation, who like Rebel Queen and Uncle Tommy, was the result of a venture between the farm and our good English friends, Mike and Marty Meredith. Deservedly, the stallion prospect of the year went to a horse that’s brought a fresh dimension to South African breeding, Admire Main, who wouldn’t be here were it not for the generosity of our good friend, Katsumi Yoshida, of Japan’s Northern Farm. And then there are those who keep their horses at Summerhill, without whose support and encouragement none of this would be possible. We’re reminded every day that success is not final, failure is not fatal; it’s the courage to go on that matters.

Forgive me a little sentiment for a moment. My late mother, Erica, was a wonderful inspiration and support in the growth and development stages of Summerhill, and in our early days, she was as much a part of the “perspiration” as any of us. This weekend would have marked her 86th birthday, and she would have been bang in the middle of Saturday evening’s partying if she’d still been around. What is still here is the “Final Call Yearling Yard”, dedicated to her memory on the occasion of her 80th.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS

Bellwood Cottages

16 November 2013

KZN BREEDERS - The annual KZN Breeders Awards takes place once again at the beautiful venue Bellwood Cottages in the KZN Midlands, owned by breeders Willie and Janine Messenger who also happen to have their beautiful Kahal filly Enchanted Kingdom nominated for the event this year. The prestigious Awards evening will take place on Saturday 16 November, 6:00 for 6:30pm.

Once again, the nominees are of a high standard this year and include a number of Group winners and performers - including the first for sire Judpot with Backworth Stud’s (recipient of last year’s Breeding Achievement Award)Colour Of Courage who won the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes, and Admiral’s Eye who place third in a Grade 1 on Vodacom Durban July day for Summerhill Stud’s young Japanese sire Admire Main. Owner Alesh Naidoo has two nominations under the Summerhill banner, with Love Struck and Admiral’s Eye.

KwaZulu-Natal has produced an outstanding crop of two-year-olds; Grade 2 winning Virgo’s Babe stole SA Fillies Nursery by five lengths (bred by Midlands Thoroughbreds) and Princess Julietta by King Of Kings has had two very close and impressive Group performing seconds (bred by Betty and Basil Linington). Julietta stands at Rathmor Stud and has foaled a Kahal, returning to Crusade this season.

Greg Royden-Turner’s Roski-bred Journeyman has been nominated in the Outstanding Two Year Old Colt category, and this young son of Trippi is in quarantine heading to Dubai under the care of champion trainer Mike de Kock. Jimmi Choo, a speedy chestnut colt bred by Cathy and Jonathan Martin of Hadlow Stud, also stands in this category along with Yellow Star’s talented son of Jay Peg, Flash Drive.

As nine time South African champion breeders, Summerhill Stud have a number of entries including Grade 1 SA Classic winner Love Struck and Grade 1 Daily News 2000 second placed No Worries (owned by Brian Burnard). Both are by Kahal.

Kahal who now stands at Bush Hill Stud also features prominently being a champion sire. He has some of the country’s top fillies and mares up for nomination - including the likes of Festival Of Fire (bred by Mr CJ Saunders and Lady O’Reilly), Eastern Greeting (bred by Kjell Foundation), Checcetti (bred by Summerhill) and Enchanted Kingdom (bred by Bellwood Stud).

Gitiano, winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile this year, has been nominated for Outstanding Middle Distance Male and Outstanding Three Year Old Colt. Bred by Mr Emilio Baseiro, he is a son of Mullins Bay and his dam Poppy Elizabeth has returned to Mullins Bay this season, after foaling a Querari.

Requiem, a son of Danehill who stood for a time at Spring Valley Stud, is the sire of both Jo De Nys’ Rhythmic Roxy and Salutation, both mares up for nomination in the Outstanding Female Stayer category.

Scott Bros have had an outstanding year with their black son of Mogok, The Apache, who seems to be getting better with age. Their nominations include another two sons of Mogok - Meadow Magic who took home the Grade 2 Emerald Cup and Wild One in Outstanding Three Year Old Colt category. They also have the big talented son of Jet Master, E-Jet, nominated for Outstanding Older Male and Outstanding Middle Distance Male. His dam, a grey mare named Esmaltina, now stands at Yellow Star Stud and is owned by Mary Slack of Wilgerbosdrift. She will visit the speedy Kildonan this season.

Seal, the talented staying son of Silvano bred by Dr Ian Heyns born and raised at Bush Hill Stud, is also entered into the category of Outstanding Older Male and Male Stayer.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS

17 November 2012

There were many triumphs at the KZN Breeders Awards on Saturday evening, but from a purely selfish perspective, the one that delighted us most was the richly deserved recognition of Linda Norval as the Anita Akal awardee. Linda joined us shortly after the gates opened, and apart from a sabbatical stint (when she left us for another man!), she’s been a mainstay of our operation start to finish. In that time, she’s become a household name, not only at home, but for many abroad, who consider her the standard by which administrators are measured.

Here is an extract from Summerhill’s 2007/2008 Sires Brochure:

“A legend of our own time manages the Summerhill Farm office. This one was here the day the gates opened, when the office was just a part of the passage in the old farmhouse. Yes, the same farmhouse built by the Deputy Prime Minister, old Colonel Richards, the one that housed the Royal Family.

This is the daughter-in-law of the legend that bred every great horse that ever deserved a mention among the legends that made Hartford the greatest thoroughbred nursery of its era. She is the same legend that (last season) single-handedly sold something like 20% of all the stallion seasons traded in South Africa. She’s the voice behind the telephone the world has come to know as Linda Norval. Celebrity, champion, institution. Like the rest of the team, she’s come to appreciate the enormity of a third (now eighth) Breeder’s Championship. She doesn’t just appreciate it though: she’s one of those that made it, and like the rest of us, she’ll never forget it.

But she’s also one of those that’s never forgotten where we all come from. There are no short cuts to the top. Blood, sweat and sacrifice are the DNA of Champions, and the day after the celebrations end, she’ll be back at work. Ahead of time, as usual.”

In all, a Summerhill delegation of twenty-one celebrated six individual awards, while Kahal’s Stallion of the Year was achieved entirely on the back of a job done here. Hat’s off to St John Gray, whose outstanding performer Dancewiththedevil, walked away with the Horse of the Year for the second time.

Saturday evening was the last dance in another great year in the Summerhill story. It’s an acknowledgement of the value of a plan coming together, a revolutionary approach to farming, a unique strategy in the raising of our horses, a recognition of the value of investing in our people, and an understanding that without the support of one of the world’s most envied group of customers, none of it would be possible.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association held their annual awards on a misty evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November to honour the people and Thoroughbreds that have done the industry proud of the past season.

It was an evening that was very well-attended by prominent breeders, owners and trainers alike. It also included an event which brought much fun and amusement into the exciting atmosphere - the inaugural running of the ‘Donkey Derby’ which was won by Bradley McHardy of Quest For Success Pre-training.

Graeme Hawkins, the COO of Gold Circle, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and the KZN Breeders Association Chairman, Koos de Klerk, gave both a welcoming and motivating speech regarding the exciting events that have occurred within the ambit of the KZN Breeders of the past year - as well as giving a hint of exciting prospects and plans for the year ahead.

“I want to extend a personal thank you to the board members of KZN Breeders Club and the effort that each of the members put in for the welfare of the club and breeders in KZN,” said Koos de Klerk. “Thank you too to the sponsors of the awards, it is greatly appreciated. We have had a number of initiatives that have borne fruit and will in future include the KZN Breeders Golf Day and KZN Breeders Million Mile Race Day, KZN Yearling Sales and the R1million race initiated for Vodacom Durban July day which is part of the initiative of our Triple Million Challenge. For a horse that can achieve the treble: winning the R1million race on Vodacom Durban July day, the next year’s Million Mile as a three-year-old and the following year as a four year old, a R1million bonus will be paid. Moving ahead, we will have another six races for R200,000 next year on the KZN Breeders Race Day (incorporating the Million Mile). Further details will be announced very soon - all of which will promote racing and breeding in KZN and we hope to see the results of that. We have already seen the success of the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale. Candiese Marnewick has been appointed as an admin manager and we hope to have her at all sales as well as to brand KZN horses, to promote KZN horses and to promote the Breeders Premium Scheme. We are also looking forward to some serious stallion purchases, starting with the announcement of Crusade.”

Congratulations must go to the winners which saw Dancewiththedevil crowned KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year for a second consecutive year. Breeder, owner and trainer St John Gray was on hand to recieve numerous awards which included Broodmare Of The Year for Emperor’s Dance who resides at Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud for St John Gray.

KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year went to Kahal, owned by Shadwell Stud and now standing at Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud. Kahal was represented with a number of nominees on the evening, in particular he stood out as the sire of every nominee in the category of Outstanding Female Sprinter - won ultimately by Mannequin of Summerhill Stud. Bush Hill Stud took home awards for The Mouseketeer in the category of Outstanding Male Sprinter on behalf of breeder Dr Ian Heyns, as well as for the Bush Hill-stud raised Seal for Outstanding Male Stayer.

Summerhill Stud once again took home the award for Leading Breeder Of The Year and achieved wins in a total of five categories - with Extra Zero, Mannequin and Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje.

Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud won the award for Breeding Achievement. Backworth Stud had achieved an impressive 53% runners to winners ratio over the last racing season. Backworth’s Variometer, nominee for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female and Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly had gone onto win the Gardenia Listed Handicap the evening before the awards in a very impressive fashion from a strong field of sprinting fillies that included winner of the Outstanding Female Sprinter categoey, Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud).

Mick Goss

Summerhill Stud CEOThe annual KZN Breeders’ Awards take place this Friday evening, so besides the Sansui Summer Cup, there are vital things happening in our neck of the woods. There’ll be those who will say they expected it of the Champion Breeders of the country to hold a healthy hand among the nominees, and it is so. However, at times like these, we remember that much of what we’ve achieved here had to do with the fact that many our racing heroes were co-bred with our many partners, a good number of whom live in jurisdictions thousands of kilometres away.

Summerhill is home not only to horses belonging to our many local clients and friends, but we have on the property the biggest concentration of foreign-owned thoroughbreds in the world. Astonishing really, when you remember that there’s the world to choose from, yet they’ve picked this farm 10kms outside the dustiest little hamlet of Mooi River, at the southernmost tip of what the smart people in the north dub the darkest continent. I guess it’s a tribute if it’s nothing else, to the camaraderie that belongs only to those that know the brotherhood of the racehorse.

We salute you all, and we’ll be especially mindful of you on Friday evening when the names of those who’ve made the finals go up in lights. Here they are :

Milestone : I’ve just been reminded by our local historian, Megan Romeyn, whose late father was the curator of the Rohde Museum, which houses anything and everything of historic value in the Mooi River district, that today marks the anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy of the United States. It’s 48 years since that fateful day, and I’m sure just about anybody whose memory goes back to that time, will remember where they were when they first heard the news. Let us know if your memory is as good as we think it is.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS : THE "BIG ONE" COMES HOME

kwa zulu natal breeders awards

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS 2010

There is something to be said for recognition by your neighbours. Jan Smuts, one of South Africa’s most famous sons, was loved by some, despised by many. Yet, in the world at large, he was revered as one of the planet’s great statesmen.

Closer to home, in the racing world, our most successful jockey ever, Michael Roberts, spent a lifetime trying to establish the faith of the locals, and had to earn himself a British Jockey’s title before he had the respect of his countrymen.

That’s just the way it all works : hero abroad, villain at home. So while our six South African Breeders’ titles sit high in the echelons of national achievement, we’ve never been short on reverence for local endeavour.

Friday night was the occasion of the KwaZulu Natal Breeders Awards. For the record, Summerhill (and our partners) scooped nine categories in a year in which we led all breeders on the continent by more than R10million in earnings. We mention the latter in the context in which it seems this was a “whitewash”. It wasn’t. There were many commendable achievements among our colleagues, not the least of which were three daughters of Kahal, all Group One winners. The list follows at the end, but before that, a few notes :

Salutation’s award was a fitting tribute to an old friend, Robert Sangster, the man from whom we acquired two Summerhill legends, Northern Guest and Home Guard. Salutation’s sire was appropriately named Requiem, whose acquisition coincided with Robert’s passing. We looked upon it as his “Last Post”, but as Salutation is Requiem’s only major race winner, it was almost Summerhill’s final note as well. She hails from one of our oldest families, that of Final Wonder and her classic winning son, Last Watch, and was bred with our English friends, Mike and Marty Meredith of Hong Kong Jockey Club fame.

Pierre Jourdan was Horse of the Year. For a horse who reignited the spirit of our sport, it was a richly deserved honour. Somehow, an honour that had eluded the likes of Nhlavini, Angus and Rebel King in recent years. The trophy, generously donated by another legend, the late Chris Smith, is one of the finest in the game. It will enjoy a place worthy of its status in the new Al Maktoum School of Excellence.

Broodmare of the Year, Garden Verse is another of those whimsical stories that engage the minds of racing people. Sold for a mere R50,000 as a yearling, it didn’t matter that she came from the family of Robert Sangster’s Champion Turncoat, or that she was a daughter of the “Emperor”, Foveros and a sister to Wild Cocktail. The fact is, she dropped a hip in her early training, and was pretty much “dumped” on us by her owner at her original purchase price as an offset for unpaid debt.

In what might be termed “poetic justice” or more appropriately “lyrical” justice, today Garden Verse belongs to the even more august family of Victory Moon, Kelly, etc, and is the dam of no less than four major race performers, including Spring Garden and this season’s Dubai Carnival victor ludorum, Imbongi. Here, we remember a varsity mate, Barry Clements, who acquired his interest simultaneously with the dam of another national champion, Icy Air. It’s what the blue collars call “arsy”.

Then finally, a word about Way West. Remarkably, for a stallion of his breeding and performance, he’s never been quite the flavour of the month. He was good enough to be contemplating a stud career at one of the world’s great nurseries, Arrowfield, when our old pal John Messara seduced us into a helicopter ride up the Sydney Coast and into the Hunter Valley to see him. We paid the penalty, but only on condition that Messara retained an interest. He did. And on Friday night, when our team fetched the Stallion Prospect silver, some of that faith was repaid. Now our colleagues need to have faith.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS 2010

megan romeyn

Megan RomeynFriday night saw the past racing season’s hard work being rewarded when the KwaZulu Natal Breeders honoured their own for racing excellence at the prestigious KZN Breeders Awards.

Pierre Jourdan, whose racing performances have enthralled the public during the past year, walked away with the laurels in the categories of Outstanding Three Year Colt and Horse Of The Year, while Salutation (by Requiem) garnered the Outstanding Stayer Female and Winning Leap (by Labeeb) grabbed the Outstanding Stayer Male award. Hear The Drums (who made it 34 wins on Friday in the Glendore Sprint), was honoured with the Individual Achievement Award. Garden Verse (dam of the illustrious Imbongi and Mahubo) was awarded Broodmare Of The Year and man-of-the-moment stallion, Way West, grabbed a deserved Stallion Prospect Of The Year award with super sire Kahal once again crowned Stallion Of The Year.

The highlight of the evening undoubtedly was when Summerhill Stud was once again named the Leading Breeder Of The Year.

THE CRITICS HAVE SPOKEN

Not only Champion racehorses, but champion cooks as well. Readers of these columns know all about Summerhill’s six national Breeder’s titles, and that there is some anticipation in the team about Friday evening’s KZN Breeder’s Awards.

Less publicised though, is the status of Hartford House, our celebrated boutique hotel and restaurant on the greater Summerhill estate. Just two months ago, it was voted for the second year in a row the people’s choice as the country’s top restaurant in the Visa/House and Leisure best of SA awards. Last night, Eat Out celebrated the critic’s top ten restaurants, and once again, Hartford House made the cut. Amazingly, it is the only restaurant in KZN to enjoy this singular distinction.
