The public also know though, that there is no value like this sale, and that many a champion and millionaire has been bought directly off Summerhill. It’s this allure, above all, that pricks the imagination, coupled with the knowledge that a good proportion of the candidates could be running within a matter of weeks, given the chance.

It’s getting hot in the kitchen, and the ambient temperature at Summerhill for today and tomorrow is in parallel mode. It’s something of a tribute to the power of the internet, that we’ve had interest expressed in tomorrow’s Emperors Palace Summer Ready To Run Sale from as far afield as Cyprus and Ethiopia (of all places), Zambia, Kenya and Mauritius, obviously on the strength of what they’ve seen of the gallops:

The public also know though, that there is no value like this sale, and that many a champion and millionaire has been bought directly off Summerhill. It’s this allure, above all, that pricks the imagination, coupled with the knowledge that a good proportion of the candidates could be running within a matter of weeks, given the chance. For that reason, we’ve published below a list of the bargain buys of the past several years, a good number of which are still midstream in their racing careers, and some of which have only just got going:

Missing from this list of course, are Iwayini (7 wins), Gida (5 wins), Ushokolethi (now 5 wins) and Isipho (4 wins), from a handful bought for Mauritian owners, as well as the horse that chased home Vercingetorix and Capetown Noir, Corredor.

Not forgetting I Got You Babe (cost: R6,000 with R421,150 in earnings and 7 wins to date), Chili Pepper (cost: R50,000 with R300,950 in earnings and 4 wins to date) and Vulcan (cost: R40,000 with R554,475 in earnings and 7 wins to date).
