J&B MET (Grade 1)

Kenilworth, Turf, 2000m
31 January 2015

Declarations for the J&B Met are on Monday 19 January and the final field will be announced on the same day with a ballot for draws being held on Thursday 22 January when the official gallops will be held.

Legislate, Futura and Louis The King top the latest merit log the R2.5-million J&B Met (Grade 1) to be run over 2000m at Kenilworth on Saturday 31 January.

Legislate, favourite since betting opened on the Cape’s premier race, failed to fire in the R1-million weight-for-age L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Grade 1) over 1600m at Kenilworth last Saturday but trainer Justin Snaith reported this week that the ruling Horse Of The Year has a lung infection. With the correct treatment, he should not take long to recover. “Those who write him off are making a big mistake,” said Snaith.

L'Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Futura has kicked Legislate off the top spot on Betting World’s boards though. He is now 2-1 favourite, while reigning Horse of the Year Legislate has drifted out from evens last week to joint second-favourite with last season's Triple Crown champion Louis The King at 5-2.

Futura was the panel’s second pick for a berth in the 20-horse field. He ran on well off a very slow pace to win the 1600m Grade 1 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate feature last Saturday from Louis The King, who was balked until it was too late for him to make an impression on the winner.

High-class Act Of War, winner of last month's Grade 1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas is the only three-year-old among the entries. He has also been entered in the Investec Cape Derby. He was scratched from the Julius Baer Politician Stakes (Grade 3) at Kenilworth last Saturday because trainer Joey Ramsden believed “running him would be of no benefit in helping us decided where we go with him – the J&B Met or the Cape Derby”.

Last weekend's Grade 3 London News Stakes vanquisher, Killua Castle, makes up the judge's top five. The Summerhill Ready To Run graduate finished a narrow second behind stable companion Louis The King in the Grade 1 Sansui Summer Cup last November and if his Turffontein performance is anything to go by, the Geoff Woodruff runner is right up there.

Declarations for the J&B Met are on Monday 19 January and the final field will be announced on the same day with a ballot for draws being held on Thursday 22 January when the official gallops will be held.
