Watch Senor Santa and Northern Princess in the 1989 Winning Form Challenge

Northern Guest / Mexican Charm
1985 - 2014

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

We will miss our champion. He brought us as a family a lot joy, laughter, happiness and priceless moments. He will live on in our memories. I will miss the trips with my father to go and visit him at Summerhill. I would like to thank the entire Summerhill team for the great care and love they gave him over the years. A very special horse!

Aw dear. Senor Santa was an incredible racehorse! And has legions of fans… I am definitely one of them! And PJ certainly has some big shoes to fill in the “weanling babysitter” role! My thoughts are with everyone at Summerhill. I know he was loved by absolutely everyone there, himans and horses alike! Enjoy your gallops in the big green paddocks in the sky Santa xx

Jenny Millington
So sad! He is a legend and loved by so many! One of my absolute favourites. I had a horse by his full brother Senor Mex. RIP special boy xxx

Elizabeth Steyn

It would be great if tellytrack could put together an insert on Senor Santa’s successful career as a Tribute to him. It would be a fitting and respectful way to bid him farewell.

Gail Sandra Amyot
It is so good for us to know that these horses are  loved, respected and cared for until their end. Thank you from a follower of all things Summerhill from Zimbabwe.

RIP Senor Santa… laid to rest today at the ripe old age of 29. A superb racehorse and an equally good ‘babysitter’ to hundreds of weanlings over the years at Summerhill Stud.

Darren Thomas Dewet
Agreed DUNCS - astute judge you are - most Phenominal turn of Foot I’ve yet to witness. One of S.A’s greatest ever!

Dennis Pavkovich
What a loyal servant. RIP champ.

Shiona Harris
Didn’t know the horse but I know the floating trophy. Rest well after all your amazing races.

Beverley Ann Sterrett
Remember him so well. RIP Senor Santa. Such a shame more champions and ordinary racehorses don’t get the same retirement this good soul did.

Duncan Mckenzie
I had the pleasure of working with him with Willie Peters still have not seen a horse with a turn of speed like him RIP champ.

Debbie Hawkins
One of my favourites. What a wonderful life he enjoyed to the end.

Brilliant racehorse!! Special old horse!! Causing chaos in Heaven running around at the speed of light.

Beyond Racing
Sad to hear that the old boy has died but what an amazing innings he had! Senor Santa was by Northern Guest out of Mexican Charm, by Mexico. He raced for over 5 seasons for over R1.7 Million and was Champion Sprinter twice and ARCSA Champion 2 year old colt in 1987. He retired back to his farm of birth, Summerhill Stud, where he was baby-sitter for countless weanlings! A legend!

Tess Lonsdale-Strzelecki
A legend and what a happy retirement. Well looked after and in turn he looked after the babies. RIP.

Janine Von Zeuner
Sounds like a Black Beauty story. I wish all horses had happily-ever-afters like he did. RIP old boy. Xx

Our pictures today are of Senor Santa, very early in his career. Senor Santa passed away this week at the ripe old age of 29, at Summerhill Stud, where he was happily living out his last years. Senor Santa was a more-than-a-very-good sprinter, winning Grade One races between 1000 - 1600 under regular riders Gavin Howes and Jeff Lloyd. He raced until 8 before retiring (as a gelding, he held the job of ‘babysitting the weanlings’ at Summerhill). :

Jonathan Firer
RIP Senor, may you run with the best of them in the green pastures in the sky,you did while you where here. Condolences to everyone
