kzn breeders million mile

The KZN Breeders Million Mile is the richest breeders’ race in the country and one exclusively for KZN-breds aged three and four years old. It includes amongst a stellar list of previous winners South Africa’s all time great Grade 1 winning racehorse and ‘super sire’ - Jet Master.

The final field for the KZN Breeders Million Mile was released Monday and it is once again an all-star cast set to line up this year, and includes last year’s victor - Emilio Baseiro’s Mullins Bay gelding - Gitiano.

Another is KZN’s current Horse Of The Year, Festival Of Fire, a daughter of Kahal trained by Mike de Kock and piloted by Anthony Delpech. Bred by Mr CJ Saunders and Lady C ‘O Reilly, she is a multiple Group winner who took home the Grade 2 KRA Guineas last year, as well as the two Grade 3’s back to back.

Clifton-bred Bezanova, by Bezrin out of Ananova by London News, finished just three lengths off Legislate in a recent Grade 2 and Louis The King in the Grade 1 second leg of the Triple Crown. He is a two-time winner over 1200m and 1600m, trained by Alec Laird.

The Sabine Plattner owned Xerxes has great recent form. The Summerhill-bred Muhtafal gelding has had two wins and two places from his last four starts, including a win at Greyville over 1600m.

The Duncan Howells trained Mogok gelding, King Of Torts, a half-brother to Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July winner Dunford is also a Grade 3 winner this season, winning over this course and distance in the Grade 3 Christmas Handicap, with another entrant King Jace finishing second to him.

King Jace, by King Of Kings who has recently relocated to Jill Fox’s The Fort Stud, was bred by Rodney and Lyn Clarkin and finished just two lengths off One Cool Dude over 1800m at Clairwood in the Grade 3 Cup Trial. He is a four-time winner.

Another one to watch for is the chestnut Kahal gelding owned by Brian Burnard, the Summerhill-bred No Worries. A horse who finished second by a nose to Vercingetorix and left Capetown Noir in third in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 last year, No Worries also placed in the Vodacom Durban July last year, as well as the Grade 2 Greenpoint Stakes and Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queens Plate - just two lengths off Capetown Noir.

Another stand out is Bush Hill’s Cataloochee gelding from the immediate family of their brilliant racefilly Zirconeum. King Neptune is out of Plutonium by Muhtafal, the mare being a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Stellite and Zirconeum. Trained by Dennis Drier and owned by Mr and Mrs Muir, King Neptune has now won four starts and placed eight times - finishing three lengths off Gitiano in this race last year. His most recent win was at Greyville, taking home the Listed Michaelmas over 1900m and placing in the Listed Easter Handicap over 2000m at Clairwood.

We look forward to seeing you at Clairwood on 29 June for the big day with a stakes total of over R2,4 million exclusively for KZN-breds. Dont forget your black and white!
