Being the most expensive yearling to have gone through a ring in Europe at 5,000,000gns, much was to be expected of Al Naamah (Galileo) on her first start.
The full-sister to the Gr.1 Oaks winner Was did not disappoint, making a winning debut at Chantilly. Comments made at the time of purchase last October at Tattersalls by Nicolas de Watrigant, buying on behald of Sheikh Joaan Al Thani’s Al Shaqab, were: “How can you quantify beauty? We think her sister is special and we didn’t want to miss this one. When you saw her walking in the paddock you could see she was just different.”
Yesterday she was different, having settled near to the pace after a slow start and went away from her opposition with a burst of speed that was impressive under Maxim Guyon (Frankie Dettori could not make the weight, but was at Chantilly).
Commenting after the race, Sheikh Joaan’s racing advisor, Harry Herbert said: “She did it very easily, she wouldn’t blow a candle out”, adding “Andre Fabre likes her a lot and she has shown today that she could be very special. She is a beautiful specimen with a fantastic pedigree and she has her whole racing career ahead of her.”
