Jack Milner - It’s hard to imagine how the three trainers of possible Vodacom Durban July runners would have reacted after the running of the Grade 3 Jubilee Handicap over 1800m at Turffontein on Saturday.

Halve The Deficit, who is a borderline entry for the R3.5-million race, performed best of all but was collared close home by Killua Castle, who came from last under apprentice Akash Aucharuz to win the Grade 3 Betting World Jubilee Handicap by a short head.

Cherry On The Top, who is almost certain to get into the big race, grabbed third ahead of an improved Meissa, running 2.25 lengths behind the winner. Of course, she will carry 4kg less in the Durban July and, as a “come-on” run, trainer Ormond Ferraris should be quite satisfied with her performance.

That short head could well have cost Halve The Deficit his place in the big race so Sean Tarry will be a little disappointed.

The concern was Tellina, who has been on the shortlist of some July tipsters but he took a walk in the betting so the run did not seem to be a surprise. He was beaten 400m out and eventually finished eighth, beaten 6.50 lengths.

It was apparent from the comments of assistant trainer Tim Woodruff that from a stable point of view, the right horse won. “We’ve been planning this for a long time. We aimed him at this race. We’re now thinking about going down to Durban for the Champions Cup over 1800m. I think it will suit him quite well,” said Woodruff.

Killua Castle, by Churchill Downs out of Prayers’N’Promises, is a Summerhill graduate of the 2011 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.
