QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS (Group 1)

Newmarket, Turf, 1609m

Dubawi sired his second winner of the Group 1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in thrilling fashion when Night Of Thunder, racing in the red and white colours of Saeed Manana, flew home to provide trainer Richard Hannon with his first Classic winner since taking over from his father this season.

With the field splitting shortly after leaving the stalls, Night Of Thunder bowled along towards the rear of the group racing on the far side of the track under jockey Kieren Fallon. Once entering the final furlong, the colt quickened impressively and, despite hanging badly in the closing stages, bettered his rivals to win by half a length from Kingman (Invincible Spirit), with Australia (Galileo) a head back in third.

Unbeaten at two, Night Of Thunder broke his maiden on his debut at Goodwood by no fewer than six lengths before successfully stepping up in class to land the Listed Doncaster Stakes, this time by an impressive three lengths. He was second to Kingman in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his seasonal reappearance.

Hannon said: “It’s the stuff of dreams. As a schoolboy you read the Racing Post and watch Channel 4 and you dream of days like this - you think you might get there one day, and you might not. But we’ve done it. I’m delighted. I thought he’d run very well and we were a bit disappointed after Newbury, but it’s a tribute to him that he has come back and turned the form around with Kingman. He’s a very honest horse and all of our horses do need a trial generally - Sky Lantern was the same, she got beaten in a trial and came back here and won it [Group 1 1000 Guineas]. It is a shame Dad couldn’t be here, but he left this morning for Goodwood - but I think he’s clever. I think he has a feeling when something is going to happen, he did it with me with Sky Lantern as well. He’ll be delighted.”

Bred by Frank Dunne and a Tattersalls graduate, he is out of the Listed Flame Of Tara Stakes-second Forest Storm (Galileo), whose dam Quiet Storm (Desert Prince) was twice Listed-placed. The fourth dam Forest Flower (Green Forest) was the Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in Europe in 1986 and subsequently won the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Night Of Thunder is the 15th individual Group 1 winner for Dubawi, also sire of Makfi, who landed this race four years ago and, coincidentally sired his first winner on Friday.
