Turffontein, Turf, 1800m

29 March 2014

On a Classic Day filled with tight finishes, one of the most thrilling came in the SA Fillies Classic. Athina, four lengths off the lead with just 200m to go, produced a tremendous burst to snatch victory in the Fillies Classic and give popular trainer Joey Soma another Grade 1 triumph.

Bred and owned by the R1-million race’s sponsor, Wilgerbosdrift, Athina started at 8-1. She was brilliantly handled by veteran rider Kevin Shea, who drove her through the bunch of horses that were fighting for position.

Along Came Polly was a neck back in second, closely followed by the well-fancied Geoff Woodruff trio of Not Sulking, Arcetri Pink and Zephira.

From the 1800m jump, Ash Cloud went into a two-length lead from Mohave Princess, Along Came Polly, Not Sulking, Zephira, Arcetri Pink, For The Lads, Santa Carolina, Isthwithi and Athina, who was about eight lengths adrift.

In the straight, Ash Cloud continued to roll, kept company by Mohave Princess. Then the pack swooped on the leading pair: Along Came Polly, Not Sulking, Arcetri Pink and Zephira… but Athina was the most dynamic of them all and claimed the victory.
