Class prevailed when a trio of Grade 1 winners fought out the finish to the Grade 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes, victory eventually going to the lightly-raced Captain Of All.

Having sat right behind pacesetter Happy Forever, the four-year-old Captain Of All quickened into the lead when jockey Sean Cormack pushed the button approaching the final furlong. Favourite Fly By Night and Copper Parade, first and second in last season's Grade 1 Mercury Sprint, both accelerated from off the pace, however, the Dennis Drier-trained colt was not for catching and ran all the way to the line to score rather cosily from Copper Parade, with the mare next best. The trio will no doubt renew rivalry in next month's Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship.

Winner of the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion as a juvenile, Captain Of All disappointed in his warm-up for this race, the Southeaster Sprint, his first run off a break of more than a year. Showing superb cruising speed, he not surprisingly faded late to finish off the board for the first time in his career.

Successful in four of his seven starts and boasting earnings of R783,150, the colt is yet another star turn in the powerful equine armoury of champion owners Ingrid and Markus Jooste.

The colt was bred by Duncan Barry at Riverton Stud and has a pedigree redolent of speed. His sire, Klawervlei Stud's flagship stallion Captain Al, has headed the champion juvenile list for the past six seasons, while his dam Serious Side is a daughter of Middle Park Stud hero and Summerhill resident Sire Fard. Grandam Forty Jewels is by Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Forty Winks (Philip Of Spain) who subsequently became a Grade 1-placed stakes winner in this country, while the next dam Casket is by King's Stand Stakes winner and superb speed influence Drum Beat.

Although Serious Side was but a modest one-time winner, she has already produced two Black-type performers with her first two foals, her first being Captain Of All's year-older half-sister Intimateconnection (Lake Coniston), who placed in both the Grade 3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery and Listed Irridescence as a juvenile. The mare's next two foals are by Summerhill-bred champion sprinter Rebel King. After slipping her foal to Riverton resident stallion Blue Tiger, the mare is now in foal to first-season stallion Pomodoro.
