The Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes feature on the International Jockeys Challenge card at Turffontein Saturday was won by KZN-bred Ready To Run graduate Judicial for Tyrone Zackey under an impressive ride by Karl Zechner.
Everest (Sarge) set the pace from The Hangman (Jallad) and Jet Jamboree (Jet Master) with Rushmore River (Windrush) next, racing three wide, and ahead of Heart Of A Lion (Seul Amour). Judicial (Miesque's Approval) was near the back followed only by Tiger’s Retreat (Tiger Ridge), Glorious Jet (Jet Master), Earl Of Derby (National Assembly) and Yer-Maan (Jam Alley).
St John Gray’s grey was still in front till about halfway down the straight, with challengers all around, but Judicial sliced past him to lead 200m out, with Earl Of Derby closing strongly. These two pulled clear of the rest, with Judicial holding his rival at bay by 0.75 lengths. Everest stayed on for third, 6.50 lengths behind the winner.
This run will probably ensure that Tyrone Zackey’s charge and the Alec Laird-trained Early Of Derby, both get a berth in the highly anticipated R2-million Sansui Summer Cup (Grade 1) at Turffontein, 29 November.
