The Cape Thoroughbred Ready To Run Sale presented by Lanzerac Hotel & Spa blasted out of the starting gate Saturday night when the second lot through the ring was knocked down to trainer Geoff Woodruff for a session topping R1.5 million. Offered by Klawervlei Stud as agent, the bay colt Perpetual Silence is by Trippi and is the second foal out of the young Jet Master mare Nimley, who was third in the Grade 2 Post Merchants. The female line is that of the Grade 1 J&B Met hero Alastor and traces to a fine Zandvliet family, that of Fiorella. This was the colt's second appearance in a sales ring, having sold for R500,000 to Doyle Bloodstock at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale earlier this year.

A striking son of freshman sire Warm White Night emerged as the sale's second seven-figure lot at R1.1 million, with the name on the docket that of trainer Vaughan Marshal. Likewise offered by Klawervlei as agent, Kemal Kavur (Lot 20) boasts a pedigree redolent of speed. He is out of Savoir Faire, a National Emblem half-sister to the fine sprinter Cordocelli (Cordoba), whose signature win came in the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship. Considering that Warm White Night also claimed the Western Cape's premier sprint race, the undisclosed new owner will no doubt hope that lightning strikes for a third time in the future.

The popularity of Trippi was underlined throughout the session, the Drakenstein stallion featuring as the sire of no less than three of the most expensive lots of the night.

Good things come to those who wait and Sorrento Stud, having failed to sell Bonfire Heart (Lot 72) at the National Yearling Sale, were handsomely rewarded second time round when the Trippi colt fetched R550,000 on a final bid from Mayfair Speculators. The colt's appeal was clearly evident on the catalogue page; he is after all a half-brother to multiple Grade 3 winner Nocturnal Affair, who subsequently went on to win in Dubai and at Doncaster and also became a Stakes winner in Ireland.

Another Trippi colt, Escape Route (Lot 19), had earlier been snapped up for R400,000 by Chris van Niekerk's Rainbow Beach Trading. Offered by Soetendal Spelling Farm as agent, the bay represented a handsome profit on his R150,000 price tag at the National Yearling Sale. He is out of a placed half-sister to the SA Oaks winners Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny and to Gypsy Queen, the dam of the multiple Grade 1 winner Gypsy's Warning

KwaZulu-Natal vendors Mark and Nicola Coppez of Balmoral Stud struck it rich when two fillies from their sizeable draft sold in rapid succession for a total of R875,000.

The first through the ring, Isabelle (Lot 47), snapped up for R150,000 from the National Yearling Sale, converted that into a R500,000 final bid from Johan Janse van Vuuren. A daughter of the late great Western Winter, she is the first foal out of the talented racemare Townsend (Captain Al), who landed both the Grade 2 Kenilworth Fillies Championship and the Grade 3 Diana Stakes and counts amongst her siblings Grade 1 Champions Challenge hero Regal Ransom (Caesour)

Shortly thereafter, Bank The Bill (Lot 50), added another R375,000 to the Balmoral kitty when knocked down to trainer Lucky Houdalakis. She is a member of the sole crop of foals sired by Medicean's accomplished Grade 2/3 winning son Bankable, who died after just one season at Summerhill. The first foal out of the three-time winner Ubuhle (Windrush), the grey hails from the Lily Gray branch of the illustrious “Lily” family.

Overall on the day, 69 horses sold for a total of R13,525,000, returning an average of R196,014, while the median stood at R150,000.
