DUBAI WORLD CUP CARNIVAL
Night 1 - 9 January 2014
The Dubai World Cup Carnival kicked off last night and will offers 11 race meetings leading up to the concluding $27,5 million Dubai World Cup race day on Saturday 29 March 2014. This year marks the 11th running of the highly successful Dubai World Cup Carnival a concept that was created in 2004 to further develop the growth and success of the sport in the UAE and Dubai. Since its inception, the Dubai World Cup Carnival has served as a springboard for progressive horses to launch into races on Dubai World Cup day.
South African globetrotting trainer, Mike de Kock, rarely leaves Meydan empty handed and combined with jockey Paul Hanagan to win the inaugural running of the $150,000 Singspiel Stakes (Listed) over 1800m on the turf with talented campaigner Mushreq (Flying Spur).
Settled off the pace by Hanagan, riding for his main employer, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Hanagan asked his mount to challenge 400m out and the pair soon hit the front to win easily.
De Kock said: “We have to be delighted with that because we thought he would really need the run. He was a Group 2 winner last season and is hopefully still improving.”
De Kock completed a double when Anaerobio (Catcher In The Rye) won the concluding $120,000 turf handicap over 1400m under jockey Christophe Soumillon who said after the race: “It is always nice to get that first winner on the board. I had some nice rides tonight, but some of the horses have needed the run. Mike’s had two winners tonight so it’s great to know that the team is going well at this stage in the season.”
