Fiorente (IRE) (Monsun (Ger) - Desert Bloom (Ire), by Pilsudski (Ire)), second in last year’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup, went one better to win Australia’s greatest race today, in the process making Gai Waterhouse the first female trainer in history to win the Cup.

Traveling off the pace early, the favorite worked his way to the leading group at the top of the stretch while Red Cadeaux forged to the lead. Fiorente and Damien Oliver tackled that rival in midstretch, shrugged him off in the final stages and went clear to win by a length. Red Cadeaux stuck on to be second for the second time in the race. Mount Athos, fifth last year, battled gamely on the rail to be third.
