EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN GALLOPS

Summerhill Stud, South Africa

11 October 2013

Michael is a Summerhill original. When we first found him here in the 70s, he was a dirty little devil with a runny nose, a grubby “bheshu” girding his loins. He’s different from most people we know, a naturally talented horseman, with the unmistakable look of “Adam Kok”, and a face rotten with mischief, so lined, it looks like an aerial shot of the Okavango Delta in the dry season. There’s an air of respectability about him these days as he goes about his managerial duties, but growing up, another thing he was rotten with, was horses: he didn’t just “do” horses, he talked to them. God knows what Spook And Diesel, Imperial Despatch and Art de Vieve had to listen to in those early days. And he could ride, goodness could he ride: the kind of man all would-be jockeys envy. Extraordinarily gifted, as good a man-manager as Summerhill has known, a universally acclaimed professional. He’s not your walk-and-trot kind of guy, though. You don’t win without being a little tough, and you need to win because second “sucks”. So when he tells you he likes a horse, with twenty years and more at this game, you want to be listening. These are his picks for the 2013 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

No-one is surprised to see a Brave Tin Solider among the favourites. Ask any one of our work riders what’s catching their fancy this year, it’s like a chorus: “the Brave Tin Soldiers”. This is a big, burly type, and like her sire, she looks a precocious sort. A world record-priced foal, Brave Tin Soldier took his regal pedigree and his film star looks to a Stakes victory at six furlongs over some of Ireland’s leading juveniles. Her dam is a daughter of Giant’s Causeway’s most accomplished sire son Shamardal (sire already of 11 Group One winners around the world), and this filly is a stand-out.

Admire Main is already off to a cracking start in his native Japan, and kicked off his career here with a Group One-performing juvenile, Admiral’s Eye in the 2013 season. In just over a fortnight, he’s had another three winners by wide margins. As we predicted, they would get better with age, and better with distance, and this fellow is a “catching” brother to the unbeaten Solar Star, who looks every bit a candidate for the R3million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup on the 2nd November.
