Summerhill CEOTo the casual objective observer (is there such a thing in racing?), the comings-and-goings on the National Horseracing Authority’s weekly merit-rating log for the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup (to be run on the 2nd November) must make intriguing reading. The most dramatic jump this week came from Alesh Naidoo’s R375,000 purchase Nisa’s Love, who leapt from 25th on the 2nd October right into contention at number 7, following a convincing victory for Charles Laird at Turffontein last weekend. Experience tells us anything can happen from now to “Cup” weekend, as three-year-olds are improving rapidly at this time of the year. It’s quite conceivable that any of the top 36 candidates on the log, could still make the cut, with 23 of them hovering between merit-ratings of 82 and 85, (where the “cut-off” sits at present). It is a time-honoured rule in our sport that any racehorse with a merit-rating of 85 and up is well above average, particularly a three-year-old harbouring unexploited potential, and often enough, these are the horses that make up your Stakes-class fields down the road. That so many of the exposed individuals on this year’s log have broken into that vicinity, speaks for the depth of last year’s Ready To Run sale.

What is glaringly apparent from this table though, is the significant presence (highlighted in yellow) of Summerhill candidates in the top 36. No fewer than twenty-three of them (just on two thirds) carried our hip-sticker in the ring. The message is clear: if you want to improve your prospects of a ticket in next year’s sweep, you can’t afford to pass over the nags in “Block A”, which leave this weekend for their date with destiny.

One anomaly of the log (which we’ve not been able to fathom yet) is the rating below the “16” cut-off line for the race, of Mount Hillaby and Solar Star, both of whom carry ratings of 88 and 89. Could it be the declared intention of the connections not to run (we’ve heard a whisper in the case of Solar Star) or a matter of “sand” form against turf for Mount Hillaby? I’m sure the handicappers would be able to explain that, though it won’t be through our intervention. Composition of the final field is in the hands entirely of the appointed selection panel, and that’s how it has to be.

Editor: Nisa’s Love is an own sister to the Summerhill-bred hero of this year’s S.A. Classic (Gr.1) Love Struck, and to Paul Matchett’s former Goldfield’s Sprint star, Fakazi, who counts a third place in the second running of “The Cup” among her virtues. Their dam, the Stakes-placed Rambo Dancer mare, Particular Passion, was a R100,000 National Sales buy for Fred Crabbia and Pat Shaw, who subsequently earned her Black type brackets under Alan Greeff.
