The KZN Breeders Club has announced innovative new incentives for racehorse owners to support horses bred in KwaZulu-Natal.

The KZN Breeders 1600, a historic race run the week before the Vodacom Durban July, will carry a stake of R1 million in 2012, up four-fold from 2011. The race will be open to all KZN-bred three and four-year-olds and will be staged at Greyville Racecourse on Sunday 1 July.

A new R1million race for juveniles will be introduced in 2013, run on Vodacom Durban July Day at Greyville over 1300m and will be restricted to graduates of 2012’s Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale to be held in the period between the running of the this year’s KZN Breeders 1600 and Vodacom Durban July.

As a further incentive, the KZN Breeders Club has introduced a bonus of R1million for any horse which, from next year, is able to win the R1million Juvenile race in 2013 as well as the KZN Breeders 1600 in 2014 and 2015.

This means a KZN-bred yearling, bought off the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, would be eligible for three races worth R1million (as a two, three and four-year-old) and should he win all of them, an additional bonus of R1million would be awarded.

In summary, the only way to qualify for all three Million Rand races and the Million Rand bonus is to buy a KZN-bred on the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale.

In this way, owners are given three opportunities to win R1 million (plus the bonus); an incentive which aims to enhance the KwaZulu-Natal breeding industry - a sales concept which has proven itself nationally.

Roughly 250 yearlings will be offered on the Suncoast KZN Yearling auction; a select band of outstanding pedigreed young colts and fillies with a strong focus on exceptional looking Thoroughbreds. Stringent selection criteria will ensure that only the best physical specimens are available, thus protecting the integrity of the sale.

Online bidding will also be offered for those unable to make the sale, while video streaming will also be introduced for the first time to afford international clients an opportunity of seeing exactly what is available.

The KZN Breeders and the TBA will put together a number of exciting events around the KZN Yearling Sales; further developments will be announced in due course.
