Black Caviar - Unstoppable

LIGHTNING STAKES (Group 1)

Flemington, Turf, 1000m

18 February 2012

The Australian mare, Black Caviar, is unstoppable. She trotted up last week for her 18th victory from as many lifetime starts in a Group One. Every time she goes to post, the promoters look for something to pitch their story at, and to heighten the senses, they seek an angle. Like a reason to strip her of her unbeaten record.

And each time, she arrives imperiously, like there’s no opposition, no matter the class of the race. This time they’re pointing to Hay List to lower her colours; they’ve met three times previously and the result has been the same. Three k.o’s for Black Caviar, albeit by a reducing distance, 3,5 lengths, 2,5 lengths and 1,5 lengths. The law of diminishing returns, they say.

They forgot though, that in every case, she was easing down at the finish, and she’s never been pressed in her life.

She’ll win again in the Lightning Stakes (Gr1) on Saturday, whatever they dish up. Nothing Australia has at the moment, is in the same class. Unless she wakes up feeling otherwise, which she’s not going to be able to tell us. So we’d better be watching. Look here for the videocast.
