Green Moon (Ire) (Montjeu) shrugged off defeat in the G1 Cox Plate to post a stylish win in ‘The Race That Stops A Nation’, the famed G1 Melbourne Cup, for trainer Robert Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams.

Winner of the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington two starts back, the former English stayer took up a handy ground-saving position before jockey Brett Prebble shifted him out with less than a half-mile to go. Green Moon responded stylishly en route to a 1 1/4-length success to finish in a time of 3:20.45 for the 3,200m distance.

Fiorente (Monsun) finished second with Jakkalberry (Storming Home) chasing hard in in third. Favourites Dunaden (Nicobar) and Americain (Dynaformer) were both well back early, and never mounted a serious challenge.

Following the victory, Prebble thanked owner Lloyd Williams for giving him the opportunity to ride the winner. “Lloyd’s always been a good supporter of mine. He’s going to be at home now really enjoying it.”

It was the 35-year-old Prebble’s 10th ride in the Melbourne Cup and Williams’ fourth Cup win as an owner. His other winners being Just A Dash (1981), What A Nuisance (1985) and Efficient (2007).
