AFRICAN BETTING CLAN CONDITIONS PLATE
Turffontein, Turf, 1450m
17 September 2011
Pierre Jourdan made an early seasonal debut on Saturday at Turffontein where he lined up in a 1450m Conditions Plate and made his supporters sweat in justifying 17-20 favouritism.
Nicci Garner writes that Gary Alexander’s charge, who had run Igugu to a length in the Vodacom Durban July at Greyville last season, was “80% fit”, according to the stable, but was still considered to have so much more class than his opposition that few pundits would hear of him getting beaten. An even-money chance moments before the off, a surge of support just before the off saw his odds shorten further.
Derreck David, who has piloted Pierre Jourdan more than any other jockey, settled the Parade Leader five-year-old gelding near the rear as Lochlorien set the pace from Without Malice and DJ Detzky. Gavin Lerena had Mike Azzie’s pacemaker a few lengths clear as the runners motored through the 400m marker, while Pierre Jourdan was battling to find a clear run. A gap opened and Pierre Jourdan pounced into it, finding daylight just in time to mow down the front-runners and put his head in front just a few strides from home. He won in workmanlike fashion with Without Malice lunging late to snatch second from Lochlorien, 0.50 lengths back. The winner’s stablemate Rebel Knight came from second last to finish fourth.
