Rags and Riches

“There’s a horse for everyone at the Ready To Run.”

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

6 November 2011

You’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating. “There’s a horse for everyone at the Ready to Run.”

And last Saturday’s Vodacom Durban July reminded us again why we like the Ready to Run. If ever the democracy of our game was at work, this was it.

A princess by birth, Igugu was crowned Queen of the Turf. Following her home, Pierre Jourdan, was a comparatively unwanted urchin of the same sales in the ring.

The one stripped a cool million bucks from the unsuspecting wallet of a former electrician at the 2009 Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale, the other a meagre R60,000 from a hitherto unknown battler of our sport.

Yet in common, they were the nation’s biggest earners of the past two seasons. Between them, they’ve amassed close to R10million in earnings, and the story’s far from finished.

Together, they’ve reminded us all for the umpteenth time, that the Ready to Run is the best sale, pound-for-pound, of big race runners in the world.

And this year they get to run for R2 million. In the Emperors Palace Ready to Run Cup.
