Meydan, Tapeta, 1900m
3 February 2011

Leaving the eighth pole and with the result all but a formality, jockey Christophe Soumillon took a look to his left at the infield screen. His South African-bred mount Bold Silvano (SAF) (Silvano) took some exception, drifting several paths towards the outside, but that would rank as his biggest scare, as the 2010 Vodacom Durban July Grade 1 hero waltzed home an easy 1½ length winner from Godolphin’s Spring of Fame (USA) (Grand Slam) in last night’s Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Group 3) at Meydan in Dubai.

It was another gap back to reigning Carlos Pellegrini Gr1 hero, Interaction (ARG) (Easing Along), who edged last year’s Dubai Duty Free Gr1 victor, Al Shemali (GB) (Medicean), out of third.

A half-step slow from the stalls, Bold Silvano took control of a paceless affair early on until allowing Spring of Fame to lead approaching the half-mile pole. Bold Silvano never gave up the fence, though, countered to reassert nearing the stretch and strode home a comfortable winner.

“This was the plan for his comeback, but I did not expect him to win that well,” winning South African master trainer Mike de Kock told Racing Post. “The World Cup is his target and he was probably 85 percent tonight, but Christophe gave him a great ride.”

Fourth in the 2010 Cape Derby Grade 1, Bold Silvano resumed with a neck score in the Betting World 1900 Grade 2 at Greyville on May 21, then went down by a neck in the Daily News 2000 Grade 1 at Greyville on June 5. Well backed when fourth in the Champions Cup Grade 1 at Clairwood on July 3, the bay successfully negotiated 11 furlongs for the first time, stalking from close range for a one length tally in “Africa’s Greatest Horserace”, the Vodacom Durban July Grade 1 at Greyville on July 31.

Bold Silvano had been off since, but had reportedly trained well over the Tapeta and was the clear international favorite. despite his late-race antics.

Bold Silvano is owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and Gill Thomson.
