The Agapanthas are in bloom at Summerhill…

“The Agapanthas are in bloom… it’s time to
prepare for the National Yearling Sales.”
Some years back we had an old fellow on our staff called Nkomiyaphi Mbanjwa, whose primary function was the nightwatch observation of mares during the foaling season. When that was over, he took on the general nightwatch duties, and at this time of year, he oversaw the yearlings for the National Sales.
Nkomiyaphi, who was 103 when we buried him, was not brought up with our kind of calendar. The only day he recognised in the year was Christmas, because it was bonus time, otherwise he lived by the signs and the seasons of nature. When after Christmas, the agapanthus came into bloom, he would remind us that it was time to bring the yearlings in for their preparation and their date with destiny in March or April. It’s that time of the year again, and above is the evidence, courtesy of our resident photographer, Leigh Willson.
