CANDIDATES FOR THE CUP
David Thiselton www.goldcircle.co.zaJoey Ramsden-trained Kwela-Kwela displayed her R1,5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup credentials at Clairwood on Sunday when coming from way back in a maiden plate over 1600m to win going away by a 0,5 length, despite a steady tailwind.
It wasn’t a strong field but Markus and Ingrid Jooste’sMuhtafal filly lost ground at the start, as she had done in her previous start, and impressed by producing a powerful finish under Anton Marcus to scythe down the Mark Dixon-trained Groovy Day in the final strides.
One person on course who wasn’t surprised with the win was the Norwegian racing journalist, Bjorn Erik Lobben, who attended a South African race meeting for the first time in order to watch his Brazilian-bred filly, the Mike de Kock-trained Here To Win, run in the first race.
Lobben met Anton Marcus at Summerhill Stud last week and while they were both admiring the Summerhill stallion, Muhtafal, Marcus had told him then that he would win on one of his progeny the following Sunday… Kwela-Kwela.
Another Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup candidate to impress over the weekend was the Gary Alexander-trained Pierre Jourdan for owner Emilio Baisero, who also produced a fantastic finishing effort under Dereck David to win over 1450m at Turffontein on Saturday, despite being very green.
The race to qualify for the Cup is on!
