The 32nd renewal of the J&B Met takes place at Kenilworth Racecourse on 31 January 2009 and the who’s who of South Africa’s glitterati are set to swamp what promises to be the Nation’s “biggest annual outdoor party”. With this year’s fashion theme being “Glitz and Glam”, sports heroes, television personalities, stage icons, Olympic Champions and celebrities will be parading elegant creations from South Africa’s hottest designers.

Let’s not forget the true Champions; the horses, jockeys, trainers and owners that line up to create the spectacle that is the J&B Met raceday.

Tab Online reports that Pocket Power will jump from draw No 10 in this year’s R2.5 million J&B Met to be run over 2000m. The Mike Bass-trained six-year-old will once again be looking to engrave his name into South African horseracing history books when he attempts to become the first horse to win the Grade 1 J&B Met three times.

Pocket Power will carry 58kg, the same weight as he did in 2008, and will once again be piloted by Bernard Fayd’Herbe, who steered the Jet Master gelding to victory in the recent L’Omarins Queen’s Plate as well as last year’s Vodacom Durban July where he dead-heated with the daughter of Act One, Dancer’s Daughter.

For those who are fascinated by the number 13 then hold on tight as Dancer’s Daughter could be the horse to follow. The Justin Snaith-trained grey mare is not only horse No 13 but is also drawn at 13. She may have blotted her copybook when running third in the Paddock Stakes but it is hoped that on the day her class will show and she will produce the kind of form that has made her a household name in South Africa.

Kevin Shea, who had the ride on Dancer’s Daughter in the Vodacom Durban July, is once again back in the irons as the duo attempt to stop Pocket Power on his favourite course.

Buy And Sell drew the No 5 barrier position and Sean Tarry will be delighted. Anthony Delpech will ride the son of National Emblem.

Surfin’ USA scored in his first race at Kenilworth and Piere Strydom is back aboard the Mark Dixon-trained runner. The pair will jump from barrier No 11.

Kapil ran on well in the L’Omarins Queen’s Plate when third to Pocket Power and will be fancied over the 2000m as he gets 2kg from Pocket Power this time out. Felix Coetzee gets the ride on the Stan Elley-trained runner.

Dean Kannemeyer has opted for the “soft route” with three-year-old Le Drakkar by running him in the Investec Cape Derby rather than the J&B Met. Despite his No 12 draw, Le Drakkar is likely to be chalked up a very short-priced favourite for the 2000m Derby.
