Two of several good things about Summerhill Stud‘s leading stallion Muhtafal is that his progeny enjoy racing, and that they train on. He‘s a “Big Five” stallion with 18% Black Type perfomers and rose to prominence again last weekend when his daughter, Ready-To-Run graduate Alejate from Greg Anthony‘s yard won the Listed Riviera Handicap at the Vaal from Cape Tango and Mat Gold, two others also sold at the Ready To Run Sale!
Just half an hour earlier Muhtafal mare Nottgalashia had won the Listed Banyana Handicap, beating a competitive field on the sand track at the Vaal. The Muhtafals are versatile, with Graded and Stakes winners on sands and turf over distances from 1000 - 2400m including Let‘s Rock ‘N Roll, Outcome, Umngazi, Fair Brutus and Veiled Essence.
Muhtafal is the second leading sire of stakes winners in the land and interestingly, after all that he‘s achieved, it is still relatively easy to buy his offspring without spending an arm and a leg. Alejate cost only R80,000 a few years ago, she‘s earned over half a million rand. There have been several other money-spinners in the R100 - R150 000 bracket, including Regal Runner, Mhlekazi, Prize Flower and Nondweni, and it is not inconceivable that even low-budget owners could lead in stakes winners by Muhtafal in seasons to come.
The Muhtafals at the 2008 Ready-To Run Sale are Cwele Cwele, a sister to Nondweni; Julia‘s Pride, a sister to Beyond Reproach and Kwela-Kwela, a sister to Mzwilili and Ithala.
Continuing last week‘s discussion about value, there are a few more Ready-To-Run graduates worth mentioning. The R40,000 purchase Hear The Drums has won an amazing 18 races; R60 000 foal Catmandu has returned R810 000 for his happy owner and as a serious Graded contender won‘t be long in reaching the R1 million mark. Bhejane, a R30 000 buy has already amassed over R300 000 and Sweet Chilli, also bought for 30k, has earnings of over R200 000 to her name with what seems like at least another few wins to follow.
The list goes in and on, week after week Ready To Run graduates distinguish themselves by winning races all over the country. When you open a newspaper or click on a racing results site, their names are there. Before this time next year you, too, can stand in the winner‘s box with your proud Ready To Run purchase. It has to be noted too that Ready To Run offers the best odds of big race success and participants in a Restricted race in the world, approximately 1 in 6 horses subscribed get a run and they get to run for what this year will be at least R1.25 million.
The Summerhill website, www.summerhill.co.za, apart from having one of the best racing blogs in the world, also contains photos and detailed statistics of Summerhill’s horses and stallions.
