Kevin Shea aboard Archipenko

Thoroughbred Daily News reports that Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa’s Archipenko emerged victorious after a thrilling tussle in the Summer Mile, to register a first British win for Mike de Kock. The bay who stalked Kandidate (Kabool) and Barshiba from the outset, was sent to the front soon after turning for home and was a willing accomplice to Kevin Shea’s forceful drive in the closing stages to hold off the rallying call of Barshiba.

“He’s a real little champ who we thought might need the race so it was an excellent win,” said Kevin Shea. “Mike has always wanted to have a winner in Britain and I’m happy to share this winner with him. This is great for South African racing as we’ve tried nearly everything by going to all these countries and this is something special. Archipenko has done everything right since he’s been with us, he beat a top-class field and he’s a top-class horse.”
