Angus Gold and the Royal Procession
(Summerhill Stud)

At last we can tell the world we’re proud to know him. It’s the worst kept secret in the world that Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold is one of Summerhill’s great pals, and one of the principal drivers of our relationship with the Sheikh’s Shadwell operation.

Angus Gold is also revered as one of the world’s great revellers and being his friend and having been regularly involved in having to sacrifice weeks of sleep, we’ve daringly suspected that Her Majesty The Queen, knowing her love for horses and life in general, might have been an envious onlooker at all the goings on in our friends life! Judging by events at Royal Ascot this last week, it seems Her Majesty might have been concerned that now he’s 50, Angus might be slowing down, and so at last She took the plunge.

Television observers of the Royal procession in the gilded coach, making its way up the hallowed turf of Royal Ascot on Saturday, might have noticed that the incumbents numbered one extra. Of course Angus’ grandfather, Sir Angus Gold was already a beneficiary of the peerage, so it came as no little surprise to see our friend alighting from the Royal carriage when it reached the paddock. However, as one Aussie wag put it, “who were the other three in the carriage with Angus Gold?”
