One of the great bonuses of living and working at Summerhill Stud and Hartford House is the daily passage of people from across the length and breadth of the world who visit us, and in the process leave behind their own share of the tapestry of life.
We’re officially out of season right now, surprisingly, because May is such a spectacular month weather-wise. Yet last night at Hartford we had visitors from Beijing, New York, London, Dublin and Newbridge in Ireland, while there were others from Durban and Jo’burg as well.
The Irish contingency are here because they’re enhancing our already highly advanced IT programme. The latest innovation will enable us, on a daily basis, to update our reporting mechanisms to clients, so if you’re a paying customer of Summerhill and want to know, for example, exactly where your mare is in her reproductive or covering cycle, you need only log onto the website, access your private code and voila, there it is. The system will also enable us to translate information speedily at any given time and process it to clients by instant email.
The men behind the revolution are Equisoft’s founder Robbie Byrne (locally famed as the co-breeder of East Cape Horse of the Year, HEAR THE DRUMS and Stakes winner HAIZI from just two attempts) and Michael Hartnett his “accomplice”. Equisoft is arguably the world’s leading software developer in their field. Quite apart from their remarkable expertise on the subject, these are two of the nicest guys in Ireland (and that’s saying something!). In typical Irish fashion, they are due to tee-off at 09h30 : there’s little point in grinding away every day, as the Irish so regularly remind us!
For what it’s worth, Robbie tells us that Summerhill is, and remains, the world’s “trailblazer” in its IT management and reporting systems, high praise when you consider that Equisoft represents a whole bunch of the top Thoroughbred farms on the planet.
