mythical flightMythical Flight (kerckhaert)Two top three-year-olds are likely to be pitted against sprinting star Mythical Flight in the Grade 1 Tedelex Computaform Sprint to be run over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday 3 May 2008.

The Computaform Sprint is one of eight Graded races to take place on Champions Day, which includes the R3.5 million Gomma Gomma Challenge as well as the Grade 1 Edblo SA Derby. The two Grade 1 races carry prize money of R1 million each.

Also carded to be run on Champions Day are the Audi Centre East Rand SA Oaks, the PG Bison SA Nursery, the Unitrans SA Fillies Nursery, the Emperors Palace Gold Bowl and the Grafton Everest Camellia Stakes, all Grade 2 events.

Mythical Flight, trained by Sean Tarry, set a South African record when beating Rebel King in last year’s race, blazing home in an amazing time of 54.96 seconds. Now a year older, the son of Jet Master could have the most to fear from two stars of the future, Seventh Rock and J J The Jet Plane.

Trainer Charles Laird has been talking about this race as the mission for Australian-bred Seventh Rock for some time now. The colt has won six of his eight starts and finished second on the other two occasions. Bred by Rock Of Gibraltar, Seventh Rock is unbeaten in three runs over 1000m and on paper at least, looks to be Mythical Flight’s main adversary.

But J J The Jet Plane has been a revelation since trainer “Lucky’’ Houdalakis reverted to sprint distances with him and he will be a factor if he is not run off his feet early on.

The SA Derby is heading to be one of the most hotly contested three-year-old events of the season. SA Classic winner Kings Gambit will be looking for a quick Grade 1 double while Dingaans winner Lion’s Blood, who also finished second in the SA Classic, has also been entered in this race.

Charles Laird has nominated four runners, headed up by Causation, who missed the SA Classic, and Senor Versace, winner of the Nijinsky Derby Trial at Turffontein on Saturday.

Mike de Kock will have great expectations here should both Hamlool and Rudra accept for the SA Derby but he has an exceptionally strong hand in the SA Oaks where he has entered the unbeaten daughter of Sadler’s Wells, Front Of House, three-time winner Garota De Ipanema and Jasmine Oaks Trial winner Moon Storm.

He will probably expect his main challenge to come from SA Fillies Classic champion Urabamba, trained by Robbie Sage.

In the SA Nursery and the SA Fillies Nursery, Charles Laird looks to be unstoppable if he runs Warm White Nights and Merlene De Lago in their respective races. Both have been most impressive and look to have very bright futures.

Supplementary Entries close at 11 am on Monday 21 April 2008 after which the weights and barrier draws will be published. Final declarations are by 11am on Thursday 24 April 2008.
