summerhill gallopsSummerhill Ready To Run Gallops (Michael Nefdt)We often suffer from short memories in this fast moving game of ours. Big races come and go, horses and the show move from centre to centre, and it’s very easy for followers of form to consign the events of just a few months back to the dustbin, as a new hero raises his head.

Less than a year ago, the country’s premier racecourse threw up a monumental upset when dual Classic winner, Jay Peg, was outposted in the last furlong of the old SA Guineas by the R45 000 Summerhill Ready To Run graduate Dynamite Mike.

Yesterday’s events at Turffontein, which featured among others on a very competitive card, the Gauteng Guineas, proved the old adage that “form is temporary, class is permanent.” As the best of Gauteng three-year-old generation clashed in the first of the Highveldt’s Classics, Eddington went to post a distinct favourite under Piere Strydom, boasting some excellent form. But the line through Horatio, who ran a cracker too, for Sean Tarry, suggested that the problem-plagued Imbongi, also a graduate of the Summerhill Ready To Run, had to be a serious runner if you could revisit his class, and ignore his recent form, when he was overcoming the various issues that had been bothering him.

It didn’t take him long to recover his former composure, this fellow whose name in Zulu means “The Praise Singer”, and what a time it was as he sailed away at the business end, to record a memorable upset.

You can’t get a good man down, so they say, and you wouldn’t want to count a Ready To Run man out till the Big Lady’s done her singing, especially when they come from the Champion Breeders!

The farm’s Ready To Run programme was in spanking form at the meeting, as first Thekkady took out the Juvenile Fillies; Paris to Peking was a rattling third in the Aquanaut; Bold Ellinore frightened everyone with a “not-ready-yet” third in the R1 million Empress Club (Gr1); and not to be outdone, Emperor Napoleon gave notice to anyone with intentions about next month’s Horse Chestnut (Gr1), that he’ll be a factor there with a big thirds in the Hawaii (Gr2), just ahead of Summerhill stablemate, Rebel King.
