Desert Links (Kahal) winning the Canon Gold Cup
(John Lewis)

karel miedemaKarel Miedema Sporting PostIf any proof was needed that the Ready To Run concept has really come of age, then the performances of 2008 are it.

Big winners from four consecutive Ready To Run sales made their presence felt in no uncertain way. Biggest of them all was Gr1 Canon Gold Cup winner Desert Links, who was bought in 2005 and brought his earnings to R1.2 million.

From the same sale came the filly Outcome, winner of the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes on July day, bringing her earnings to R600k. July day, incidentally, was also when Desert Links took his place in the big One, the Vodacom Durban July, where he ran the fastest 400m to finish.

From the 2006 Ready To Run sale came Umngazi. He won the Gr3 Byerly Turk Plate, after he’d earlier become the very first winner of the Emperors Palace Cup - that special race only for Ready To Run graduates, which this year is worth a sizzling R1.25million.Then there was Thekkady, graduate from last year’s sale, who won the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes as a 2yo in 2008 and has a half sister (lot 36) at the sale this year.

Look back a little further, to the 2004 Ready To Run sale, and you’ll find Hear The Drums, the East Cape Sprint Cup winner whose earnings of just over R1 million come from 20 wins, accompanied by a 114 merit rating.

Imagine being able to lead in your horse twenty times! Imagine, indeed. After all, dreams of the Big Time are what the Emperors Palace Ready To Run sale is all about. Not to be left behind, we take a look at the pedigrees of the 160 entrants, and unearth a nugget or two. Read on………………..

Al Mufti (Roberto)
He’s not covering any more, so getting stock from the old warrior will soon be difficult. Remember, he’s a sire-of-sires, and lightning can strike again - certainly when there’s a young colt out of a mare with an international pedigree such as (14) Smart Cookie (Jallad: 1r/1w). The mare is a 3-time winning full sister to a 6-time winner, the pair inbred 2x2 to closely related sons of Red God, Blushing Groom and Red Alert. The cross with Al Mufti should suit this mare very well, linking Buckpasser to her three lines of Tom Fool/Spring Run, and making her youngster one to note.

Alado (Danzig)
From the first crop of this young sire - comes a colt out of 3-time winner (46) Antiqua (Jungle Warrior). The mare is from an English female line, her grandam a daughter of Red God, which is the source of the mare’s own double of close relatives Tom Fool and Spring Run, similar to that of her stakes placed half sister Russian Gal.

Asaal (Machiavellian)
Gr3 pl 5-time winner (24) Swinging London (Roland Gardens: 1r/1w) is the dam of 3-time winner London Eye, full bro to the 2yo colt on offer.

Winning mare (61) Chase The Stars (Token Of Youth) has an American pedigree background. Her dam is a half sister to a host of stakes winners and dam of stakes performers, the next dam a daughter of Bold Reason. On offer a colt.

Badger’s Drift (Badger Land)
Lightly raced winning mare (119) Kasbah Queen (Al Mufti: 1r/1w) has a colt, her 2nd foal. The mare is half sister to Gr3 pl Liberty, from a productive US female line. She’s inbred 3x3 to Buckpasser, which provides a suitable link to Badger’s Drift grandam who is by Red God and a close relative of Blushing Groom. Interesting mating given Badger’s Drift’s own pedigree.

Caesour (Nureyev)
The filly out of 2-time winner (136) Mosca (Fort Wood: 2r/0w) is a first foal. The mare is half sister to 2 other multiple winners, from a highclass family which also produced Al Mufti, Sportsworld, AP Indy & others. The filly doubles 3-part brothers Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells 2x3, but probably more importantly brings Caesour’s damsire Graustark as a link for the dam of Fort Wood. It must be noted that French champion 2yo Fotitieng is a half brother by Caesour’s sire Nureyev to grandam Oak Fly. The latter was bred to Caesour without success, but the “insertion” of Fort Wood in the pedigree may make all the difference.

Stakes placed 3-time winner (149) Persuasive Reason (Rainbow Dream: 3r/1w) has produced 6 winners to date, from as many runners. She’s a daughter of highclass broodmare Izindaba, and represented by a colt, who is 3-part related to Gr3 pl Caesar’s Warrior.

Cape Cross (Green Desert)
English mare (50) Berkshire Lass (Zilzal) has an American pedigree background, and is half sister to US Gr1 winner & sire Alydeed as well as to the dam of two Graded stakes performers. On offer a colt, her second foal, imported from Aus.

Captain Al (Al Mufti)
Winning mare (150) Piety And Whit (Dancing Champ: 2r/1w) has produced five winners to date, from a variety of sires. She is from a strong Gr1 producing background. Her sire Dancing Champ has a cracking good record with Captain Al’s sire Al Mufti, making her colt one to note.

Five-time winning sprinter (47) Ask Aly (Tilden) is half sis to a Gr3 performer, their dam a Gr3 wnnr. Her colt is a 2nd foal, inbred 3x3 to very close genetic relatives Complete Warrior and Imperial Dilemma, whose pedigrees have (among others) Busanda, dam of Buckpasser who is so relevant in Captain Al’s own pedigree. Could be interesting.

Doowaley (Sadler’s Wells)
The colt out of American mare (3) Sara’s Warning (Caveat) is half bro to 2 Oaks wnnrs, and also to the dam of a Gr1 & a Gr2 winner. Classy stuff, which deserves attention.

Dynasty (Fort Wood)
From the first crop of the Horse of the Year - comes a filly out of winning mare (33) Tripple P (Shoe Danzig). The mare is a half sister to 4 other wnnrs; this is her 2nd foal. The mare’s damsire Golden Thatch is a close relative of Sadler’s Wells’ dam Fairy Bridge, giving a 4x3 cross in the youngster on offer.

Fan Club’s Mister (Mr Greely)
Two-time winner (89) Flaxen Fields (Badger Land), who is a half sis to Gr3 wnnr Golden Gangster, her a colt, her 1st foal. This is the potent female line of Gr1 wnnrs Have a Ball and Bush Telegraph.

Also with her 1st foal is 4-time winner (97) Gateway (Damascus Gate), whose own dam is a SW of 6 races.
The colt out of winning mare (58) Catch On (Krusenstern: 1r/1w) is full bro to a winner. The mating is interesting, as Mr Greeley’s sire Gone West is a full bro to the mare’s sire Krusenstern, making for a 3x2 cross in the youngster. Looks interesting.

(135) Montana’s Pride (N. Assembly: 1r/0w) is a daughter of 5-time winner Montana Girl. She’s represented by a filly, her 3rd foal.

Two-time winner (73) Decoder (Northern Guest: 2r/0w) has an American family background. Her colt is a 2nd foal.

NZ bred winner (1) Sale e’ Pepe (Volksraad) has had one previous foal to race, a winning half brother to the filly on offer.

Flying Spur (Danehill)
The imported 2yo colt out of NZ bred 4-time winner (55) Bon Cher (Sir Tristram) is full bro to a 4-time winner (and half brother to 7 other winners down under). The mare herself is a 3-part sister to successful sire Grosvenor, and also to the dam of new local sire Requiem. The latter is a son of Danehill, who is also sire of Flying Spur, which makes the young colt on offer a remarkably close relative to Requiem.

Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)
This world-class sire has recently come of age down under as well, siring his first Gr1 winner there. That should certainly stimulate interest in the three 2yo’s on offer here, all of them imported from Aus.
Unraced Irish mare (83) Elaine (Common Grounds) is dam of 2 winners, one a full brother to the filly on offer. The mare has a solid black-type background.

Two-time winning mare (128) Luanda Star (Danzig Connection) is half sister to two Graded SWs down under. Her colt offered is her 3rd foal Aus mare (26) Tantalum Fever (Encounter) has a black-type American background. She’s half sister to new local (Summerhill) sire Way West. The filly on offer is her third foal. Interestingly, Galileo and her grandam Prospect Fever have a great deal in common when their pedigrees are viewed (Sadler’s Wells/Nureyev, Mr Prospector, Busanda). Looks to be an interesting prospect.

Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat)
American mare (152) Policy Issue (Moscow Ballet) is a 2-time winning half sis to two Graded SW in the US, of which one is sire Vinnie The Viper. She has had two foals to race, both multiple winners in the US, and comes with a half brother to those, also bred in the US. The youngster not only doubles close relatives Storm Bird and Nijinsky 3x3, but also has a 4x4x3 cross of close relatives Secretariat, Imsodear and Millicent (the first two appear 3x3 in Giant’s Causeway). There are other interesting links in the pedigree, going to the bottom female line, and present also in the mare’s half bro Vinnie The Viper. No doubt should be one to note.

Gold Press (Seeking The Gold)
Two-time winning mare (82) Eiger (Fort Wood) is a full sister to Holly Oak, SW of 8 races, and to Matumi, dam of Gr3 performer Mokaro. On offer is a filly, her dam’s 2nd foal.

Grey Eminence (Indian Ridge)
(165) Rouble (Northern Guest) is a winning half sister to highclass Sovereign Seas and 5 other winners. Her 2yo filly is her 3rd foal, and half sister to a winner.

Hawk Wing (Woodman)
SA Gr1 pl SW Silver Empire is half sister to the 2yo grey filly out of Aus mare (39) Vintage Silver (Marooned). The dam is herself half sister to SWs and dams of stakes winners. The youngster was bred in Aus.

Jallad (Blushing Groom)
Equus champion filly Icy Air, a Gr1 placed multiple Gr2 winner of 9 races, has a full brother on offer. Their dam (142) Nordic Air (Northern Guest: 22r/18w/2sw) is half sister to 2 other dams of Graded stakes winners, in France & SA.

Jet Master (Rakeen)
Gr1 placed SW (48) Bacio (Del Sarto) has produced 6 winners to date, two of those with black type, and all from different sires. The mare is a granddaughter of highclass matron Party Time. On offer a filly with obvious paddock potential.

Unraced Irish mare (124) Lamri(IRE) (Fort Wood) is an Irish-bred daughter of local champion racemare Arabian Lass. She has a 2yo filly here, her third foal, and half sister to a multiple winner.

Kabool (Groom Dancer)
The filly out of (105) Honour And Glory (Hermitage) is the first foal of her Gr3 winning dam, who is a half sister to 3 other black type performers. One of the latter three is by Fort Wood, who is a half brother to the dam of Kabool. There is significance in this, as there is a close relationship between the pedigrees of Fall Aspen and the dam of Secret Prospector. There are other links in the pedigrees of the sire & dam of the 2yo filly to suggest this is a very nice mating, giving future paddock value to boot. One to note.

Kahal (Machiavellian)
From an international black type female line comes winning mare (38) Vintage Event (Braashee: 4r/4w), who herself is half sister to a winner in Britain. Her only runner to date (by Personal Hope) won twice. She has a half brother to that one, inbred to close genetic relatives Coup de Folie and Sadler’s Wells. The sire x broodmare sire cross is still perfect at 4 from 4.

Argentinian bred winning mare (81) East Africa (Candy Stripes) is dam of 2 winners to date. On offer a half bro to those.

Winning mare (101) Gypsey Spirit (Coastal: 7r/5w) is dam of 5 winners from 5 runners, two of those with black type, including Gr1 placed Catmandu (by Makaarem). All are by different sires. This is the family of Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy. On offer a filly with a very nicely constructed pedigree. One to take seriously.

Winning mare (125) License To Print (Lustra: 2r/2w) has an American pedigree background. From five previous foals, she’s had 4 winners (of which one has produced a stakes horse already). On offer a half bro to those.

NZ mare (129) Maroof’s Grace (Maroof) is a winning half sis to 3 winners down under, one with black type. She’s represented here by her 2nd foal, a filly inbred to Danzig.

The only previous foal of 2-time winning mare (110) In Style (Model Man: 2r/2w) is a winner. She has her 2nd foal here, a colt. The sire x broodmare sire cross is still perfect. Also bred on that cross is the filly out of 2-time winner (134) Model K (Model Man: 2r/2w). The mare is a daughter of Gr1 placed SW Kal Sufi.
(126) Lizmay Creek (Muhtafal: 1r/1w) is a winning daughter of champion racemare Up The Creek, the latter the dam of nine winners, of which 3 are stakes horses. On offer the mare’s 2nd foal, a colt inbred 3x3 to Mr Prospector.

Internationally, the cross of Mr Prospector line sires with mares by El Gran Senor has paid big dividends. Locally, El Gran Senor’s full bro Northern Guest has the likes of Bold Ellinore from Mr P.-line sire Kahal. The match seems to be based on the compatibility of Raise a Native and Sex Appeal. There are three 2yo’s on offer with the same cross. The 7 previous runners of (86) Favoured Nation (Northern Guest: 22r/20w/2sw) are all winners, and were produced from different sires. The mare has an American pedigree background and comes with a colt. Then there is the colt out of (95) Gamalakhe (Northern Guest: 22r/20w/2sw). He’s the 2nd foal of the mare, who is a full sis to stakes pl Mercury Rising and to the dam of Gr3 wnnr Thekkady. This is a French female line. The trio is completed by a filly out of winning mare (113) Jibe (Northern Guest: 22r/20w/2sw), whose family background is Irish.

The filly out of 3-time winning mare (71) Dance On Silver (Rambo Dancer: 1r/1w) is the second foal of her dam. Interesting pedigree, with Kahal’s damsire Green Desert linking to the mare’s bottom female line elements. One to note.

Labeeb (Lear Fan)
This American Gr1 winner made a good impression with his first crop of local juveniles, which included stakes winner Chief Blackfoot last season. He is also sire of Graded SWs in the US. The key to his pedigree appears to be Hail to Reason, to which his best American runner is inbred (also involving another close genetic relative of Hail to Reason).

Unraced mare (30) Treasure (Coastal: 1r/0w) is a daughter of US Gr2 winner Improyal, from a solid black type family. She’s represented by a colt, half bro to a 3-time winner.

She’s dam of 7 wnnrs, incl Gr2 wnnr Imbongi, Gr3 winner Spring Garland, Gr2 runner-up Prima Versa, and Gr3 placed Full Spectrum who is the dam of Gr3 wnnr Oracle News.
