Lot 161 Running Riot (Muhtafal)
(Gareth Du Plessis)
There is a lot of depth to the catalogue for this year’s Emperors Ready To Run Sale, evident in the variety of choices made by experts at the breeze-ups last week.
The two-year-olds, drafted into next week’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale to be held at the TBA Sales Complex, were put through their paces at the breeze-up gallops held at Summerhill Stud last Friday and at Eikenhof on Saturday.
A crowd of about 250 enjoyed the entertainment laid on by Mick Goss of Summerhill Stud while watching the 2008 consignment of SA’s Champion Breeders run along on the farm track.
Generally, the progeny of Kahal and Labeeb were again considered to be some of the best movers at Summerhill, although members of an expert panel were varied in their individual selections, unlike last year when several popular choices appeared on most of the experts’ lists.
With the exception of the strong, across-the-board sentiments about Mathafa Lot 63, a half-brother to Pick Six by National Emblem, the varied opinions among panelists and the public alike proved that there is even more depth to this year’s catalogue. The bidding is likely to be competitive when the Sale starts at 2pm on Sunday, 2 November.
The Summerhill panelists’ choices were:
Mike Azzie (Lots 22, 63 and 151)
Michael Roberts (Lots 23, 81 and 121)
Dean Kannemeyer (Lots 53, 63 and 139)
Sean Tarry (Lots 63, 96 and 88)
Eamonn Cullen (54, 63 and 130)
Graeme Hawkins (63, 86 and 121)
Mike Azzie (Lots 36, 39, 78)
Michael Roberts (Lots 93, 98 and 140)
Dean Kannemeyer (Lots 39, 44 and 114)
Sean Tarry (Lots 8, 45 and 66)
Eamonn Cullen (13, 36 and 139)
Graeme Hawkins (7, 101, 145)
A total of 42 two-year-olds galloped at Eikenhof on Saturday afternoon and Bloodstock SA’s Sales Manager Caroline Simpson reported: “There wasn’t a big public turnout here, but the horses were impressive, this draft is undoubtedly more impressive than last year’s consignment. All 42 young horses breezed up and things went smoothly. We are looking forward to the sale.
Catalogues are available from TBA Headquarters @ Gosforth Park or visit www.tba.co.za
Most of the lots should be in their TBA stables by Thursday, 30 October.
