For several years now, we’ve been the lucky recipients of return visits by members of the West Australian breeding fraternity. Whether it’s the gum trees or the genuine hospitality that makes them feel at home here, we don’t know, but we do know that they’re always welcome. This week Sally Oakes, Chairperson of the West Australian Breeders Society and treasurer of the National Thoroughbred Breeders Association of Australia, and Veronica Jackson-Smith, CEO of West Australian Breeders Society paid us another visit, in a repeat of their trip with a large delegation of their colleagues for our Stallion Day last July.
Their mission this time was to entice trainers, owners and breeders into attending the Magic Millions Sales in Perth in February, and we have to confess, this is probably their strongest catalogue. There have been some fine horses come out of West Australia in recent years, not the least of which is this past year’s World Champion Sprinter, Miss Andretti, and Sunday’s placed runner in the Michael Roberts Handicap, Silver Empire. Michael was here accompanying the Australians on Sunday evening, together with his lovely wife Verna, and we were able to celebrate the fact that in the very race that takes his name, he also had the satisfaction of leading in the winner, West Coast Gold. Well done to you Michael, and of course our Aussie friends for returning to us.
