Hear The Drums, a triple champion at last week’s East Cape Racing Awards (Champion Older Horse, Sprinter of The Year & Horse Of The Year) was not the only “cause celebre” among graduates of the Summerhill Ready To Run programme. Haizi, a belated purchase by Gavin Venter from last year’s draft, took the Champion Two Year Old Fillies title as well.
This daughter of Kahal was a very impressive winner of the East Cape Nursery, and was three times Stakes placed, besides making her the best advert for those that wish to stake their Ready to Run claims off the farm, as she was “passed out” and purchased afterwards.
Remarkably, both she and Hear The Drums were bred by Robbie Byrne’s Equisoft Syndicate (from Ireland) in partnership with Summerhill.
There are not too many breeders or organizations anywhere that can claim to have bred two Champions (from just 2 mares) in a single season.
Her dam, Royal Princess, from the immediate family of London News, was a shrewd purchase by James Armitage shortly before Haizi’s Stakes triumph. Perhaps there is something to be said for the acquired wisdom that comes from years of working with good families and decent horses.
