News from the principal French Yearling Sale being staged by Arqana at the famous Deauville seaside resort, is that one-time Summerhill employee Laurent Benoit was the buyer of the session-topping filly on the third day of the sale. She is a daughter of Hawk Wing, the World Champion racehorse of a couple of seasons ago, and sire already this season of 14 individual Two Year Old winners from his first crop, including two Stakes winners. Laurent Benoit served two seasons in various capacities at Summerhill, and is remembered for the fact that as he was about to depart these shores and set up his own bloodstock agency, his final gesture was to buy the first R1 million filly ever sold at public auction in South Africa, and that took place at the annual Bloodstock Sale at Summerhill in 1999, when he outlaid precisely that sum for the highly promising filly, Lady Broadhurst after whom his Broadhurst Agency is named.
Laurent is closely associated with the Napoleon of French trainers, Andre Fabre, and his latest acquisition at R2.3 million, is scheduled to be trained by the French master.
“It has been really difficult to buy yearlings and I have been beaten quite a few times on expensive ones”, he explained. “Today I saw a little bit of daylight and I bought this filly and also hip 249, a Royal Applause (GB) colt, for an Australian client who has horses in training with Andre Fabre.
For the record, Summerhill has an exceptional Hawk Wing colt as part of its consignment to the Emperor’s Palace Ready to Run Sale in November from the leading Australian family of Golden Slipper heroine, Burst.
