Two of last year’s panelists at the Ready to Run gallops had cause to pat themselves on the shoulders after Sunday’s sport at Clairwood Park, which witnessed a number of serious debuts from the sale’s graduates. None more serious though, than the Summerhill exacta, which coughed up Galant Gagnant (by Kahal) and his close pursuer, Umngazi (by Muhtafal), the two of them beating the 3rd horse by some six lengths.
Mike de Kock was quick to point out that both these youngsters made his “top ten” choices at the gallops, while Graeme Hawkins single-mindedly zeroed in on Umngazi.
Graeme also reminded us that we’d steered him away from Umngazi when he’d made his interest known (his mother’s progeny record was “spotty”, at best), yet that hadn’t deterred him (or the triumphant bidder, Mark Dixon) from taking the horse to R180 000 in the ring.
The old saying “horses make fools of us”, is probably as true today as it was when it was coined but one thing’s evident, the men that graced the panel have been at this business for a collective 150 years and more, and they’ve not been there for nothing.
When they speak, it pays to listen!
