We had some thrills and many spills on the day, with His Lordship (by Rambo Dancer) defying his age and showing his own gallantry, by toting top weight into a place in the SABC Sports 2200. We then had to wait for Cleome (by Muhtafal) to earn herself a cheque in the Gr.1 Golden Slipper a while later, whilst the Summerhill team was having to watch our runners in Johannesburg on the “all weather” to find a couple of winners in the early stages of the meeting. In the end, (and it was worth the wait in spite of the frustrations) we were well rewarded with an exceptional performance by Bold Ellinore, now the highest rated older filly or mare in South Africa, in the Garden Province Stakes (Gr 1).
She stormed home from one of the best filly fields ever assembled for this time-honoured event, and showed her well being by getting to the post 2.25 clear. This was a triumph for Michael Destombes, an old school friend and a wonderful supporter of Summerhill. He has had a great deal of success this year through the likes of Kildonan, Gilded Minaret (who was successful for him in the Golden Slipper (Gr.1) earlier in the card) and of course, with yet another progeny of Kahal, Emperor Napoleon, who is one of the best three year colts of the present generation.
