In spite of the remarkable success of his stallions this season, John Messara (CEO of Arrowfield, Australia) remains tireless, (and relentless) in the promotion of his band. There are no prisoners with our friend John, and he takes nothing for granted.
Not even when FLYING SPUR has already nabbed the domestic Sires Championship and REDOUTE’S CHOICE is the nation’s leading stallion, fee-wise, at Aus $330 000 (or a tad over R2 million!) Daily, almost, John and his team are hosting out-of-state evening seminars, and we were among his attendees. Remember, Arrowfield are venture partners in resident Summerhill sire, WAY WEST, like REDOUTE’S CHOICE, FLYING SPUR and DANZERO, a DANEHILL son with a “Blue Diamond” connection.
It’s worth reflecting on (and Mick Goss made the point afterwards) that the great stallion makers of the world, Lord Derby (Phalaris, Hyperion, Pharos, Fairway and Pharis) and Tesio (Nearco, Ribot and Donatello), about which legions of books have been written, didn’t have Coolmore or Darley to contend with as competitors.
And yet, despite this, Messara has engineered the development or breeding of the colossi, Danehill, Zabeel, Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur and Danzero (every one a Champion Sire) in this day and age, and against quite considerable odds. We don’t get to appreciate the icons of our world till they’re gone, but this one’s worth a mention.
