The forthcoming weekend (27th May) witnesses the staging of Gold Circle’s Festival of Speed at Scottsville racecourse. The tradition of four Gr.1 races, all on the same day over 1200 metres goes back to the beginning of Scottsville’s lengthy history, and as long as we can remember. For more than 30 years, the Gilbey Stakes (now the Golden Horse Casino Sprint Gr.1) was the oldest sponsored race in South Africa (yes, older than the Rothmans July and J& B Met), and its list of winners reads like a who’s who of the great sprinters of South African history. It promises to be another landmark event with the presence in the field of the unbeaten Mythical Flight and his daring challenger, Summerhill-bred Rebel King. At the weights, and in the conditions, we have a sneaking suspicion that Rebel King will seriously test Mythical Flight’s unbeaten record, and whatever happens, you can count on a full Summerhill turnout on the day.

For the sake of interest, we have listed the fields for the Allan Robertson Fillies’ Championship Gr.1 (for Two Year Olds) as well the Juvenile Colt’s race, the Golden Medallion Gr. 1, in which Summerhill is well represented again. More on these later in the week.
