We saw some heartening efforts from Big Race contenders this past weekend. Pick Six put up a remarkable trial for the Gomma Gomma Challenge in an advanced plate over 1400m at the Vaal. Started at the prohibitive bids of 3/10, his class was immediately evident even in the midst of a couple of emerging fellow three year olds as well as a brace of well tried older horses, as he was forced to make his own pace against his usual custom. Anton Marcus allowed himself the maximum luxury of 4 glances behind as he coasted through the last furlong to a 4 length victory. This effort will have him alongside his Summerhill contemporary Emperor Napoleon and last season’s Champion 3 year old, Elusive Fort, at the top of the betting for the R3 million Gomma Gomma Challenge (Gr1).
The other big runner of the weekend was yet another exciting 2 year old from the farm, Thandolwami, who sauntered away by an increasing 6 lengths under a hard ride from Jeff Lloyd. Craig Eudey’s colt probably beat little of note, but he made no effort winning as he did, as he’s headed this weekend for the (Gr3) Byerley Turk Stakes at Clairwood. Could this be the 3rd Graded Stakes winning juvenile in as many weeks from Summerhill?
