Top Jo’burg conditioner, Paul Matchett’s romance with MUHTAFAL is like a stuck long player. And so is MUHTAFAL’s love affair with mares by COASTAL, the only American Classic winner to stand in South Africa.

MzwililiMzwililiQuite incredibly, MZWILILI’s stunning plunder of the spoils in the Pretty Polly (Gr3), the first Graded Stakes for Juvenile fillies of the season, marked the fifth consecutive week in which a Summerhill-connected runner had notched-up a major race victory (nine all told). She did so with a knockout punch from last over 1100 metres, hauling in the R5 million Rock of Gibraltor filly, UBER ROCK in the final “100”, and exploding away by an increasing 2 lengths. This is some filly, believe me, and is her sire’s 2nd juvenile Feature winner of the season, following REGAL RUNNER’S giant-killing effort, in the Storm Bird.

As we said so often before, if we were going to war, MUHTAFAL would be the general.

THE READY TO RUN REMAINS S.A.’s MOST FERTILE SOURCE OF STAKES WINNERS, RAND-FOR-RAND. Both these youngsters served as a startling reminder of the exceptional class (not to mention value) which customers have come to expect from the Ready To Run sale. But they’re by no means the end of the week’s tale.

Within an hour of MZWILILI’s connections’ podium appearance, those belonging to PARIS TO PEKING were gracing the self same stand after his demolition effort in the Caradoc Gold Cup (Gr3). This was the surest form of notice that anyone with ambitions of housing the Gold Bowl (Gr.1) will have to contend with this one.

Two other Summerhill Ready To Run grads to earn a Graded Stakes mention this week were ROSE WINDOW (beaten by a whisker in the Tony Ruffell Stakes (Gr.3) with contemporary COASTAL ROCK (ALBARAHIN) third, and Gomma Gomma Challenge (Gr.1) entry, BHEKINKOSI’s big run in the Colorado King (Gr.2) after a 4 month layoff, will have encouraged his trainer to believe he has some attractive options in the months ahead. IS THERE BETTER VALUE IN THE WORLD??

For the record, these six Stakes performers of the past ten days cost just R570,000 between them, the auctioneers obviously premature (in retrospect!) announcement of the conclusion of business as follows:
