I have often wondered if broodmares have the sense that each dawn is just another day of the same: finding the sweetest grass, avoiding the flattened ears of the paddock matriach when the feeds are put out, seeing if you can run the broodmare team ragged when they come to take your foal’s temperature, enjoying the sun on your back, turning your back to the wind and rain when a storm breaks over the Giant, and indulging the colt foal that frolics at your heels, nurses a little too roughly, then flops to the ground to enjoy an hour’s rest.
Ellinore (x Northern Guest) was doing exactly that on Saturday, blissfully unaware that her 3yo son Emperor Napolean (by Kahal), and his sister Bold Ellinore (4yo by Kahal), were ensuring their mother was now an early favorite for the KZN Broodmare of the Year Award.
Emperor Napolean ran a short half head second in the R1m Grade One SA Classic; 35 minutes later his sister ran third in the R400,000 Grade One Post Empress Club Stakes. It was further black type to the slew both have already earned.
It was additonal triumph for their sire Kahal who also sired the 5th placegetter - London Ballet - in Race 6, the R500,000 Gr 1 SA Fillies Guineas.
