So we all saw what a great horse Ramonti is when he scooped his fourth Group One in Sunday’s Hong Kong Cup. He’s not only taken Europe’s best milers to the cleaners three times this season, but he’s stretched his speed to 10 furlongs. The significance for South Africa is that at the beginning of this four- time Group 1 winning sequence, Mullins Bay was second to him in the Premio Ribot (1600m Gr2) in Rome. An effort all the more meritorious for the fact that at a trip probably short of his best and on his first outing in thirteen months, Mullins Bay was able to give the World Champion-elect a proper run for his money.
Mullins Bay is currently in quarantine in Cape Town, his final mission being the 1600m Gold Challenge (Gr1), and then the Vodacom Durban July (Gr1). And then he’ll be with us on Stallion Day, the first Sunday in July. A thought to savour.
