Admire MoonAdmire Moon (Vanessa Ng)Admire Moon, a winner earlier this year in Dubai, beat the Melbourne Cup runner-up Pop Rock. Odds-on favourite Meisho Samson was third. Admire Moon was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum earlier this year for US$40 million to spearhead his newly-founded Japanese breeding arm.

Darley’s Japanese spokesman Richii Takahashi said the organization had taken a gamble in starting Admire Moon rather than going straight to stud. He said the decision had to be made between going to stud with a last start disappointment against the horse’s name when he finished sixth in the Emperor’s Cup last month.
“We had a lot to think about in terms of his credentials in his stud career,” Takahashi said.

“After his sixth-place finish, his last victory would have been in July, so we had to think about how to get the best response from future breeders and future owners of his offspring.”
