Monday 1st October, saw not only the passing of the first sector of the Summerhill Breeding Season, but also the eagerly awaited arrival of the Summer rains in Kwa-Zulu Natal, which brought relief to a wide spectrum of farmers across the province. It also marked, amongst other things, one of the busiest days in the Breeding Shed.
In circumstances where one rarely appreciates a steady downpour, soaked to the bone and pushing through the last of the remaining evening covers, I stood with KINGMAMBO’s Grade 1 winning son, MALHUB outside the shed, shouting the remaining last minute checks prior to entering, “mare ID scanned, marking’s complete and correct, both covering schedules checked”. Several disgruntled thoughts pass through the back of one’s mind as under the conditions, nothing seems to be approaching the “ready” stage within. One’s attention is drawn back to the stallion in hand, who although having “picked up” the impatient “vibes” from me as a handler, remains patient, with entirely different thoughts in mind.
The Blog has previously touched on the attributes of DANEHILL and the influence he has as a sire of sires and quietly embarrassed by one’s impatience it is at times like this that one appreciates what “is in hand”. MALHUB for one, was rated as one of the top Grade 1 Sprinters in Britain in his year and with a Timeform Rating of 126, he is one of the few, who denied Triple Grade 1 winner, Johannesburg further victory, when winning The Grade 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. DANEHILL is represented by both SOLSKJAER and WAY WEST in the barn, but one of the frequent questions stemming from copies of the Blog in the Stallion Barn from the staff is just who is KINGMAMBO?
Maria Niarchos designed the mating which produced the high classed five time Champion Mare MIESQUE, labeled by leading pedigree Guru Ken McLean as an “Elite Mare”, she produced amongst others, the multiple Grade 1 winning sire, KINGMAMBO, who appears to be emulating his sire MR PROSPECTOR, as a sire of sires, and he goes on to state that the MR PROSPECTOR sire line is at full strength thanks to his sons, MACHIAVELLIAN (Kahal, Hobb Alwahtan), GULCH, KINGMAMBO, SEEKING THE GOLD, FAPPIANO, FORTY NINER, AFLEET, FUSAICHI PEGUSES, WOODMAN and DISTANT VIEW amongst a host of others.
Several of these sires have gone on to produce leading sires themselves, featured all within the Top Ten on the US General Sires List, MACHIAVELLIAN is represented by STREET CRY, FORTY NINER accounts for DISTORTED HUMOUR and KINGMAMBO accounting for LEMON DROP KID. Under the KINGMAMBO banner in Europe we have seen the likes of KINGS BEST and DUBAI DESTINATION appears to making an impression with his first crop and LEMON DROP KID continues to fulfill his promises.
Commenting on MALHUB, Andrew Caulfield stated that anyone who has ever watched a documentary about wild horses, will know that the right to breed is won only by those stallions capable of overcoming the challenges of all the other contenders, and to do so, the stallion requires a combination of speed, endurance, great physical strength and indomitable spirit. MALHUB had all of these and at the time of winning the “Golden Jubilee” his record stood at four wins from seven starts and he quickly followed up being narrowly “touched off” in three successive Grade 1’s to INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and KYLLACHY.
Today JOHANNESBURG and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT are leading sires in their respective domains and KYLLACHY is rapidly proving himself. As we stand in the rain, one asks oneself, is MALHUB predestined to fulfill the attributes of the KINGMAMBO lineage, based on pedigree, performance, physique, the faith of which fellow breeders and buyers have in him and what we are seeing in the paddocks again in 2007, we believe he is just that and he more than justifies the circumstances in which we stand today, for with each rainy day comes a reward.
