The gears moved up a notch last Friday as fast work commenced for a number of the 2006 draft. The chosen youngsters worked in pairs and were asked to stretch out over 600m - half or three quarter pace depending on what the horse wanted to do and felt comfortable with.
The fast work allows the colts and fillies to stretch out and have their action assessed. It also introduces them to what their career paths are set for … and the light switches that flick on in many heads as they size up a companion is quite a remarkable thing to witness.
Tarryn reports that she and Michael “definitely had some surprises on Friday”. It also appears we have some sudden pressure on the Platinum Dozen list - Tarryn wants to add a few more names!
GREET THE GREEK colt (by Russian Revival). ‘He absolutely flew and was on the bit the whole time,” Tarryn says.
FIDELITY BOND filly (already on the Platinum list - see previous Ready to Race Diary entry) and AQUATIC THRILL colt (by Rambo Dancer) as well as HILL OF PLENTY filly (by London News) “all caught our eye” reports the Ready to Race Manager.
A bit of added pedigree background for those interested in the female lines:
HILL OF PLENTY was a winner at 3. She is the dam of 3 foals, 2 raced (one winner, one placegetter) including Isandlwana (by Russian Revival) who placed 3rd in her first start last week and won today! HILL OF PLENTY is the daughter of MILL HILL, 8 wins, R473,465, at 2 to 4, 1400 - 1800m, inc. Lancome Fillies H, Gr.1, Germiston November H, Gr.1, Golden Slipper, Gr.2, Rex Trueform Fillies Ch’ship, Gr.2, Debutante S, (L), Sunday Star Spring Fillies S, (L), placed 5 times, inc. 2nd BAR Valley S, Gr.1, Lancome Fillies H, Gr.1, Ultimate Computer Fillies Guineas, Gr.1; dam of 8 foals; 7 runners; 6 winners inc.: BUSHRA (99 f. by Badger Land (USA)): 7 wins, R395,250, at 2 to 5, 1200 - 1800m, inc. GREET THE GREEK was a 6-time winner and she has produced 5 winners from 7 starters including the exciting 3YO colt by National Emblem - ODYSSEUS - who has won and placed from all his starts.
AQUATIC THRILL was a 4-time winner of R126,875 and her first foal - Prince Jaime - is a winner.
Manes were being pulled and tails trimmed on Saturday morning and when I wandered down to the Hartford block on a separate matter there was a noticeable air of excitement across the weekend team. Tarryn reports that this is normal this time of year. ” All the riders have prepared the brothers and sisters (sometimes even the dams) of this crop of 2YO’s, they have broken them in and schooled them through their lessons and all that effort is starting to come to fruition.”
